'No decision' on future of proposed Aeronautica attraction

AeroNautica would span the width of Trafalgar Dock, next to Ocean Terminal AeroNautica would span the width of Trafalgar Dock, next to Ocean Terminal

COUNCIL chiefs have said that no decision has been made over the future location of a multi-million pound tourist attraction in Southampton.

The team behind the £8m Aeronautica attraction that would celebrate Southampton's maritime and aviation history had hoped it would be housed at the Trafalgar dry dock as part of the redevelopment of the entire waterfront.

However, as part of the wider half a billion pound scheme for the waterfront scheme led by Southampton City Council, developers have initially recommended the pier berth be used to accommodate the Red Funnel Ferry terminal that would have to be relocated under the plans.

It would mean the Aeronautica plan would have find a new location.

Landowners Southampton City Council and Associated British Ports have been in preliminary talks about the initial finds but have stressed no final decision has been made.

Leader of the council Royston Smith said: "The developers have suggested that the best place for the Red Funnel Ferry would be the Trafalgar berth. This is very much in its early stages however, and we will wait until March to see whether the numbers actually stack up. It may well be the case that they don't and then it will be as we were."

However, Cllr Smith said the council would do what it could to help the project, that would feature all aspects of the city's unique links with air and sea transport and replace the Solent Sky museum, find a new home within the scheme.

Get it built, would be amazing.
.
Every other city has had money spent on it in the country, about time some was spent in Southampton.

Does seem strange to have an Aeronautica attraction costing £8m and the new Titanic museum costing £15m nowhere near each other...the Aeronautica attraction could and should have costed £30m and included the Titanic museum there! That would have killed the debate on locatation as well.

I hope they succeed in their current locations however as it's too late to do much about it now.

But not in the interests of the people of the city for which this carbuncle, similar to that monstrosity of a Sea City museum, will hold little interest or relevance. Those whose interests it will serve will be those who seek their egos stroked and think they are enhancing their own careers.

Southampton will never be able to celebrate anything as the water front is all commercial and no civvy street guy/gal will ever get to enjoy its glory xx

We won't buy over priced apartments, or enjoy sea view walks as your just money money money, you wouldn't understand culture if it smacked you in the face.

You try to profit from tragedy and yet neglect the golden opportunity u have to make this port thrive, not just for profit but for community.

There is no community spirit as you can't profit from it xx

Southampton is a great port . Why not have the best sailing school ever in view of all the cruise visitors. linking the cities heritage sites etc.
A fun pool/dock for jet skis/bikes water skiing sports, olympic champions in the making.
A fun place to visit, family orientated with restaurants , shops etc.
Feed off what you have naturally instead of just letting the upper classes rule the roosts x

I don't think you thought this one out! For a start, Southampton doesn't have an upper class - Southampton is too down market!

If we followed your logic we would have nothing for the tourists to visit and therefore we wouldn't have the tourist industry or the many shops and services that cater for these visitors. How much do you think that would affect local jobs and the local economy?

The Red Funnel Terminal should be in the place where the derelict Royal Pier is now.

Meles meles says...
10:06am Fri 20 Jan 12

Have Red Funnel actually looked at this site? It's all very well to draw a line on a plan, but the logistics just don't weigh up. Right alongside the Ocean Terminal car parks. What happens if there's a security alert in the docks and Red Funnel have to stop operations? The remains of the once elegant pumphouse would have to be incorporated as it is associated with the listed dry dock. And not to mention foot passengers having to walk an extra half mile alongside traffic (though I assume there would be a bus service).
Better to infill the Town Quay marina area with dredgings from 201/202 berth and build the new linkspans on that, with the proposed new access gate at the Triangle car park corner when the dual carriageway is built.
Use some logic!

We had 30 years worth of councils who sat on their hands and did absolutely nothing. The current council have a positive approach and are seen to get things moving - it's a tough ask after 30 years of gross incompetence by the previous good for nothing councils.

The Trafalgar dry dock needs the Admiralty permission to have any thing done to it, A ruling requires so many dry docks in each area in times of national emergency, and the way things are at the moment I can not see permission be giving there is a shortage of dry docks in this area.

SO many people are quick to poo-poo everything suggested... here's my tuppence worth... If you haven't got anything constructive to say - then shut up and be miserable quietly on your own!

Get it built... get the museum open... build Watermark WestQuay, Build new attractions to this city, get people talking about the City!

Sometimes I think maybe its me who has it wrong!

Southampton folk just don't realise what a load of whingers we have in our midst. I welcome new people to Southampton (even the ones who can't speak English!) because I find they have a more positive outlook on life - the long-term locals are always down in the mouth and whinging.

Not replied on here for a while as I get fed up with SO much negativity amongst fellow Sotonians.

I tend to just read the comments usually untill I see Southy has made a false statement and as he annoys me and many others on here and probably in person to most that know him I had to reply back to his latest comments!.

Southy you ole fool when did you last visit the Trafalger Dry Dock, 3/4 of it has been filled which was over 12 years ago now.

The infilled area around the former number 6 dry dock is where the short term car park is for the Ocean Terminal, along its side there a few pictures and diagrams showing the dry dock as it was built with a superb picture of the 1938 built Mauretania entering the dock

Although it was grade 11 listed ABP were allowed to partially fill it in but left a quarter of it unfilled as seen in the picture above where the planned museum would be situated.

ABP did not or would not have to gain permission from the Admiralty to have anything done with it, where do you get this so called information you ALWAYS go on about.

There is not a shortage of dry docks in this area, number 7 dry dock closed for final ship repairing in 2005 as it was deemed uneconomical due to a lack of business and the cost of repairs to the dock gate.

Ships do not go into dry dock as often as they used to due to modern paint and easier access to engines and with the vessels getting bigger and bigger the KGV Dry dock was getting to small for most of these vessels.

There are commercial dry docks at Portsmouth Naval Yard catering for vessels upto 40,000 tonnes as well as in Falmouth and there is no legislation governing dry docks in case of a national emergency.

It is all down to the tenders that ship repairs yards offer and the fact that the German ship yards do very well in this say alot for them.

YOU ALWAYS come out with so called facts without any substance, you think that most on here assume what you say is fact so do they often do not bother to reply and thats how you think you always get away with it but I can see you clear, you make it up as you go along you really do, you pathetic ole man!
