Cunard take delivery of Queen Elizabeth

Shipping line Cunard today took delivery of its new 92,400-tonne liner Queen Elizabeth which will be officially named by the Queen on October 11.
The handover ceremony took place on board the vessel at the Fincantieri Monfalcone shipyard in Italy where the liner was built.
The Queen Elizabeth will join the other ''Queens'' in the Cunard fleet - the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) and the Queen Victoria.
Cunard president and managing director Peter Shanks said: ''I'm certain the British will take this truly magnificent ship to their hearts, as they have all the Cunard Queens.''
The new ship will now sail for its home port of Southampton where it will dock on October 8.
After the naming ceremony by the Queen at Southampton, the liner will leave on its maiden voyage - to the Canary Islands - on October 12.
This is the third Cunard ship to be named Queen Elizabeth. The first was launched on the Clyde in Scotland in 1938 by the then Queen Elizabeth - who later became the Queen Mother - with the present Queen, then aged 12, looking on.
The Queen launched the second Queen Elizabeth, the QE2, on the Clyde in 1967 and also named the QM2 at Southampton in 2004.

Japan led the world for many years but now only builds around 3-4% of the total tonnage.
Most cruise ship building is concentrated in Italy, France, Germany and Finland although the order book has diminished in recent years and some yards are struggling despite (discreet) national subsidies.
It is a great shame that the UK's proud manufacturing history has been decimated but the country punched above its weight for many years.
The UK lost 25% of its wealth after WW1 and at the end of WW2, exports were down 37% on 1937.
The lend lease arrangement with the USA then saddled the UK with significant economic challenges which further eroded manufacturing opportunities as did the growth of ex Commonwealth colonies.
All that said, most of us are far better off, from a material standpoint, than our forebearers.

I can remember being at a function some years ago where one the senior figures at a UK shipyard was telling us that they were tendering to build a vessel for a UK owner but the Korean yards could build the entire ship cheaper than the UK could buy just the steel to carry out the work.
The only subsidies given out to the French yards are the few that are partially state owned.

Unfortunately almost all the UK's industries/services are subject to global competition. This is a fact of life.
However the good news here is that a good deal of UK workers are involved in the fit out and refurb of cruise ships in European yards and further afield

Not possible.
The Marxist Clown living in a Redbridge council house, purchased courtesy of Mrs T's policies, is rumoured to be a clone of the preserved left testicle of the original TollPuddle Martyr.
This might well account for his propensity to list alarmingly to the Left, both in politics and all matters maritime?
