Thousands watch new Queen depart

Watching from Hill Head as Queen Elizabeth sails off into the sunset Watching from Hill Head as Queen Elizabeth sails off into the sunset

FROM Weston Shore to Gosport, all along the Waterside to Calshot and across the northern coast of the Isle of Wight, they came to watch Southampton’s latest cruise ship set off on her maiden voyage.

Thousands of people lined Southampton Water to see Queen Elizabeth leave after slipping her moorings at 5pm yesterday.

The ship will call at Vigo, Lisbon, Cadiz, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Madeira, with guests staying in ultra- luxurious suites, paying £15,799 each for the 13-night voyage.

Queen Elizabeth will not only take the name of her home port of Southampton to all corners of the world but the city’s coat of arms as well, after the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Carol Cunio, presented it to Captain Christopher Wells at the traditional plaque and keys ceremony.

What a lovely sight as she slips off around the Isle of Wight. Pity she's going - she's such an elegant looking vessel - with her square lines and high and short bow and stern proportions which make her look a bit of a house brick at sea. The QE2 was an ugly duck indeed. Bring on the next one - can't wait!! I am so very proud indeed, oh, I am welling up, ah ah ah!!

Are you for real?
The QE2 an 'ugly duck', she was probably one of the most well proportioned liners ever built!
And you state about the Queen Elizabeth 'pity she is going', well you will be pleased to know she will be back in two weeks so you can see her again then!
But to be honest I think your comments were rather sarcastic more than anything or rather lacking knowledge!

I think the comments were sarcastic. And as for the 'get a life' comment, you need to grow up. Typical of little keyboard warriors.

Isn't it about time some of the people commenting on here became proud of Southampton's shipping heritage/history and not just the City's football team??! Or they could just move away from the coast and they wouldn't have to see the ships or hear about them (and then the rest of us who read the news on this website wouldn't have to put up with their comments!).

I was being a little sarcastic for which I apologise. But really, why should I pretend to be proud of something which I feel has very little aesthetic appeal? It is my opinion that the vessel did not have beauty as a priority on the design spec. Sadly, this betrays the whole reason we like these ships in the first place i.e. the old liners with correct / sleek proportions, high speed and a feeling of magic. The QE2 was the final beauty - that's just my point. Is the Queen coming back in 2 weeks? Good, I bet she didn't think much of her names sake. There are those who would say that a prison barge was something to be proud of if the Queen's name was stated on it and the word Southampton. I will only be proud of something I like. This I do not like! I make no apologies for that.
