QE2, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria due in port today
The QE2 and QM2 at Southampton
The QE2 and QM2 at Southampton

THOUSANDS of sightseers were expected to pack Southampton's waterfront for a grandstand view of all three Cunard "Queen'' liners as they met in the city for the first and last time today.

Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2 are all due to be in their home port at the same time for a historic meeting never to be repeated.

Last January the three liners were together in New York for what was then thought to be a one-off occasion but a change in QE2's schedule meant that the fleet would be together once again in Southampton.

At about 5pm Southampton's Mayflower Park was expected to be the best vantage point to see QM2 leave the Eastern Docks and position herself close to Queen Victoria and QE2, both berthed in the Western Docks.

In November, QE2 will leave Southampton for the last time at the end of a sea-going career that has spanned more than four decades to become a floating hotel and tourist attraction in Dubai.

Cunard's fleet will then be temporarily reduced during 2009 but the following year the arrival of the company's brand new vessel, Queen Elizabeth, a sister to ship to Queen Victoria, will again bring the number back to three.

I'm sad, that I can't be in Southampton today, to see the 3 Cunard-Queens togehter in Southampton. I hope, you will show lots of photos from this special event. Is it possible, to send me one of your newspapers with pictures of this great day?
Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely,

Does anyone know whether there is going to be a firework display and if so when?

Why is everything written in past tense?

I'm confused - has this event happened, as everything appears to have? However, I've just seen South Today on BBC Breakfast and they said it is today. Bad journalism I think, to save writing it up later!

Or poor comprehension on your part.

"were" "as they met" "are all due" "was expected" i think they need to make up their mind at what tense they are using. Everybody is confused and they don`t give you a lot of information about a very important event. If they are expecting "THOUSANDS" to turn up they should have at least written it correctly.

Sorry, but it is one queen and two blocks of flats. Still think that Cunard went wrong with the design of the other two. They are nowhere near as elegant as QE2 and a poor substitute in my opinion. Sorry to be negative

totally agree with james of Southampton - QE2 looked so elegant sat there this evening - such a pity that southampton couldn't or didn't do more to ensure she stayed here - what a symbolic structure she is.

would it not be better to move them along the coast a bit to Brighton than all the queens could be together
