People say that the internet has killed romance, but that is not the case for one University of Southampton student.

The old-fashion romantic decided to use his creative side to leave one young lady a love letter with a modern twist at the university’s library.

Alfonso, 25, originally from Mexico City, crafted a screen of the instant messaging service WhatsApp writing a message asking fellow student Naomi Lucking out on a date.

Miss Lucking posted images of the notes on Twitter, with the caption "Some guy in the library gave me this and it was the most awkward experience of my life. 10/10 for creativity though."

Alfonso had drawn a lock screen image with a ‘notification’ on it saying one new WhatsApp meesage.

The folded piece of paper then instructed Miss Lucking to ‘Unfold to open’ revealing an imagined conversation between the pair.

He had gone into great detail to draw up the conversation even including a ‘status’ for Miss Lucking that says she is "busy studying and drinking coffee".

Iin a text bubble, Alfonso wrote: "Sorry to disturb your studies, but I really need to ask... would you like to have a coffee with me someday?"

Even though Miss Lucking did not take Alfonso up on his offer the internet has been full of admiration for the hopeless romantic, who has received messages from woman from all over the world.

Alfonso said he had hoped that his approach would show that a piece of paper, ink and some creativity can achieve, instead of using technology.

Naomi's tweet about the message has been shared over 33,000 times on Twitter since she posted it.
