Police name cyclist killed in crash on Mountbatten Way in Southampton

David Irving David Irving

THE cyclist killed in a crash in Southampton last week has been named by police.

He was David Timothy Irving, 48, of Leigh Road, Wimborne, Dorset.

Around 8.45am, Monday, December 17, Mr Irving was cycling along Mountbatten Way when he was involved in a collision.

He was travelling to work as an IT consultant at Carnival Cruise Lines on West Quay Road.

The 48-year-old from Wimborne has been described by his family as: "kind, thoughtful and devoted to his long term partner and two beautiful daughters.

"He had a great sense of humour and a love of cycling, skiing and kayaking."

The driver of a white Ford Transit minibus, a 37-year-old man from West End, and the driver of a Mercedes Coupe, a 56-year-old from Fordingbridge, were both arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. They were bailed until March 19, 2013.

Police continue to appeal for information from anyone who saw the collision or Mr Irving, who was wearing an orange-coloured jacket, before the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Road Death Investigation Team at Eastleigh, quoting Operation Ruddy, on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111

What a surprise that a White transit van is involved . In my experience they are always blokes in white transits driving to close and cutting people up . My heart goes out to the cyclist family .

There's always one isn't there?!

In my experience the type of vehicle is not relevant to poor driving skill

however you don't know the circumstances of this tragic accident so please refrain from posting such stupid, poorly thought out, insensitive comments.

Not only has that family lost a Dad and Husband. Those two people who have been arrested will have that death on their conscience as well.

No one wins in circumstances like these.

Reality-man,

I drove along that road 5 minutes before this happened and it could have been any of us to hit the cyclist! It doesn't matter what colour car/van anyone was driving, the glare from the low sun was very bad that morning.
My thoughts go out to ALL involved.

Dont be a p rick mate ffs.
you dont know the circumstances of this tragic accident and of course you have to blame the proverbial 'white van man'.
Well i drive a very large white van mate - much bigger then the minibus in this accident and we are not all 'cut em up' merchants. Im very aware of the damage my vehicle could do to people and drive accordingly.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the cyclists family.

After I made that observation about the low sun they removed the comments on the original item, motorists rarely 'see' anything smaller than a car, as that's the size where it might be a danger to them, add low sun and a rider, especially in high-viz, becomes even less visible.

The Echo make it perfectly clear that comments have been left open for tributes.
I behalf of all compassionate readers, may I apologise to David's family and friends, for the irrelevant and hurtful comments posted.
Family and friends must be devastated, may the find comfort in each others' love
May he rest in peace.

Condolences to the friends and relatives - it must be awfully difficult to cope with, especially at this time of year.

How could you be so silly?

My thoughts go out to the family and friends of all those involved, the worst part is that is was so close to Christmas too.

As for some of the above comments, get a life, I may debate at times as to what happened but even I'm not selfish enough to ignore the message from the echo that specifically states the comments are for TRIBUTE COMMENTS ONLY.

I'm sorry, I thought I read that this was not to be turned into a debate about who was to blame, and yet we see comments about "white van drivers, etc"? My daughter goes to school with David's daughter and the family are absolutely heartbroken about this and do not need to see comments left in such bad taste, when none of us were there to see what happened. Please spare a thought that we have all had a lovely Christmas with our families, but this family have been left devastated by their loss, and every future Christmas will be tinged with sadness forever, long after we have all forgotten about it. I lost a relation just before Christmas 12 years ago and the heartache never goes away - there is always one absent place round the dinner table. Come on everyone - a little compassion please, whatever your private thoughts are? and come on Echo, monitor these posts please - I hope I speak for the majority here?
