As fifth birthdays go, Helston Farmers’ Market could not have asked for much better.

Stallholders and organisers were greeted with one of the best days of weather so far this year, with blue skies and sunshine helping draw in customers.

The market, established in 2008, has grown to become one of the biggest local food markets in Cornwall, selling everything from fresh meat and vegetables to local honey and preserves, cakes and crafts.

Market controller Joanne Schofield thanked everyone who had supported it over the years and helped grow it from 16 producers through to the 40 plus stalls that trade there today.

Held on the first Saturday of each month, the market now has a permanent home at the Old Cattle Market thanks to the creation of the building and market hall last year by the South Kerrier Alliance.

Last Saturday everyone involved in the market celebrated with a birthday cake which was appropriately decorated with vegetables made out of icing.

Joanne said: “The market has gone from strength to strength over the past five years and it is great to be back at the Old Cattle Market where it all started. People loved the social gathering and enjoyed the experience of buying good, local produce – and they still do.”
