POLICE have issued warnings to residents over the security of their out-buildings following a spate of shed burglaries in the borough.

In the last two weeks, there have been 13 reported break-ins to sheds, garages and summerhouses in Stanford-Le-Hope, Corringham and Grays.

Police are urging residents to be wary of any suspicious behaviour and get in touch if anyone is seen acting unusually.

Residents are also asked to consider installing alarm systems to out-buildings, to fit wire caging inside sheds to hinder would-be thieves and keep tools in a lockable box fitted to the floor.

Police are also advising that valuable items be kept indoors.

Community Safety Sgt Alison Facey said: "Garages and sheds by the nature of their construction and position, especially if located some distance away from the main home, are always going to be vulnerable to thieves.

"Tools and bicycles have been the main items taken as these are often easy to sell on.

"We again ask people to contact us immediately if they witness anyone acting suspiciously or see unusual activity taking place.

"Furthermore, if anyone knows who is committing this crime or has been offered items through unusual circumstances, then we would also like to hear from them."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Grays police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
