COMMUTERS are this evening facing delays on a Hampshire railway due to ongoing faults.

Signalling problems between Winchester and Basingstoke mean fewer trains are operating on London bound lines.

It means trains between London Waterloo and Southampton could be delayed by up to an hour or be cancelled altogether.

And problems are not expected to be resolved until around 2am tomorrow morning.

It follows multiple track failures at Winchester station that occurred late last night which caused major disruptions to services this morning.

A statement on South West Trains’ website said: “Multiple track circuit failures occurred late yesterday evening and a specialist team joined our engineering team to investigate the problem.

“Work was carried out to replace multiple elements of the equipment to rectify the problem, but unfortunately this was not successful. The work has continued overnight and today to find the fault and will carry on until this has been repaired.

“Several modules and specialist equipment are being tested on site and will be replaced until we have repaired problem affecting the line. This will take some time to resolve.”

Services between Weymouth and London Waterloo will be diverted via Netley and making additional stops at Woking.

Meanwhile Cross Country services are taking ticket holders via any reasonable route until further notice and a replacement bus service will take people between Fareham and Eastleigh in both directions.

Southern Railway and First Great Western services are also taking passengers via any reasonable route and agreeing to accept South West Trains tickets.

If South West Trains customers have been delayed by over an hour they are advised to keep their tickets as they may be eligible for compensation.

Daily Echo: Dangerous working at Winchester railway station admitted by contractors

It is the second time in a week passengers have experienced long delays, angering commuters.

Signalling problems caused delays between Winchester of at least 30 minutes on November 3, infuriating railway users.

Regarding the problems last week, a South West Trains spokesman said that a signalling fault meant all trains had to come to a complete standstill at Winchester before asking permission from the signaller to continue.
