A HAMPSHIRE bus operator was forced to pull out of a major Southampton route last night after four buses were attacked in an hour by vandals.

Bluestar says that three of its buses were targeted on Hinkler Road in Thornhill, and the number 3 service run by First Hampshire was also hit.

The attacks, which terrified passengers and drivers alike, resulted in smashed windows on the vehicles.

Bluestar operations manager Paul Coyne withdrew the 18 service which runs from Millbrook to Thornhill from Hinkler Road, because of the damage.

A First Service 3 bus also had its windows smashed by vandals on Hinkler Road, however none of their buses were diverted.

Mr Coyne, said: “I can confirm that we took the regrettable decision to withdraw our Bluestar 18 bus from Hinkler Road and Warburton Hill yesterday evening.

“This was due to a third incident of vandalism resulting in damage to our vehicle.

“The safety of our staff and customers is an absolute priority - and this was at the forefront of my mind when taking this decision.”

Despite the attacks the number 18 route is fully operational today but the situation is being closely monitored by Bluestar.
