PASSENGERS were late for work today after the Hythe ferry service was suspended for four hours.

One of the vessels was undergoing its annual service and the other broke down, leaving rush-hour commuters stranded on both sides of Southampton Water.

White Horse Ferries, which operates the vessels, laid on a replacement bus service.

But one commuter said: “People late for work, losing time and money, while other missed train or Red Funnel connections.

“There were lots of irate passengers.”

It follows a similar incident two years ago when one of the ferries broke down two days running.

Commuters were forced to use buses and other forms of transport after the vessel Great Expectations was hit by the same fault twice in 24 hours.

White Horse Ferries was unable to use its other boat because of gearbox problems.

A company spokesman said today’s breakdown resulted in the service being out of action between 6.40am and 10.40am.
