A HUGE hole has closed a Hampshire road following a water main burst.

The hole, which is several feet deep, appeared this morning after water started gushing from a 15in main at Bury Road, Marchwood.

A Southern Water spokesman said the road was closed in both directions and would remain so for several days.

Marchwood county councillor David Harrison added: “When an incident like this happens, there is nothing you can do except close the road and fix things as quickly as possible.

“It always causes massive disruption.

“I'm pleased to see Southern Water are on the scene attending to the burst main. I will be pressing highway officers to get the road repaired and back in operation as soon as possible.”

But Southern Water said the road was likely to remain closed until Tuesday.

A spokesman added that supplies that been re-routed following the burst, which meant that no-one was without water.
