A CYCLIST has been taken to hospital after colliding with a car on a major Southampton road.

It was initially believed the incident in Bassett Avenue involved a lorry and a coach but a South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) spokeswoman confirmed it involved a car and a bike.

SCAS sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance crew to help the male cyclist, who sustained non life-threatening head injures and was treated at the scene before being taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance.

The road was shut in both directions initially after the crash, which occurred at around 3.28pm, but at about 4.30pm police were able to reopen both carriageways.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hampshire Constabulary on 101.
