DOZENS of Hampshire fare dodgers have been captured at train stations across the county.

Around 25 people have been convicted of dodging offences at stations across the county.

In one day in a Southampton court prosecutions cost fare dodgers thousands of pounds. A further ten cases were adjourned to the New Year.

Most had the cases against them proved in absence with fines ranging from £60 to £440.

At the one hearing at Southampton Magistrates Court the fines and costs, court charges, compensation and victim support charges came to £14,469.

One offender, Gary Saunders, 55, of Landguard Road, Shirley, who was caught at Southampton Central, was also convicted of using an emergency exit when there was no emergency and threatening behaviour.

His fines totalled more than £1,200.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: “Every year, the honest majority of passengers are deprived of millions of pounds worth of potential improvements to their train services as a direct result of deliberate fare evasion.

"It is a basic principle of rail travel in the UK that passengers must buy a valid train ticket before starting their train journey.”
