A CYCLIST has been rushed to hospital with "possibly life-threatening injuries" after being hit by a car.

The man was involved in a collision with a car on Highlands Road in Fareham at about 1pm.

An ambulance crew treated him at the scene before he was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said the service was called at 1.04pm, and that the man had sustained "serious head injuries, which are possible life-threatening".

The air ambulance was called but because it had been to another incident it needed to be refueled and so the man was taken by road instead.

Highlands Road has now been reopened after it was closed between Stow Crescent and Oak Road for several hours.

Motorists had been urged to avoid the area and First Bus diverted some of its services in the area.
