Two lanes were closed on the eastbound carriageway of the M27 following an incident involving five vehicles at junction five at Eastleigh.
One car ended up on top of the car behind it in the outside lane.
Despite the dramatic crash, no-one was injured.
Motorists can expect delays of two hours as far back as junction three on the motorway and also between junctions 11 and 14 on the southbound carriageway of the M3 due to the smash.
At the peak of the congestion, there were nine-mile tailbacks on the eastbound carriageway of the M27.
The road was fully reopened by 9.25am, but delays remained, due to the sheer weight of numbers of vehicles stuck in the queues.
Motorists can also expect delays on the westbound carriageway between junctions nine and five due to heavy traffic.
The ROMANSE traffic system is advising all drivers to avoid the area if possible.
