DRIVERS are being urged to take extreme care on the roads as the cold snap begins to bite.

Motorists across Hampshire awoke to one of the worst frosts of the winter so far – and even colder weather is being forecast for the weekend.

Temperatures will plunge to -4°C tonight, with a widespread frost leading to ice on untreated surfaces.

Conditions on the roads this morning are particularly treacherous on minor rural roads that have not been gritted.

Two vehicles collided at the junction of Lee Lane and Church Lane in Nursling at 8.15am.

Police are investigating reports that the accident was caused by a large sheet of ice on the road. No-one was hurt.

Highways England says drivers should be ready to slow down if they have to, especially on bends and exposed roads.

A spokesman said: “Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security – even if you drive every day on the same stretch of road.”

Dr Angie Bone, head of extreme events at Public Health England, added: “It’s really important to take extreme care when out and about.”
