POLICE have arrested and questioned the driver of a car that was involved in crash in which a teenage girl died.

The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after the car she was a passenger in collided with a tree.

Hampshire police investigators closed Hordle Lane where the accident happened for nine hours as they tried to established what led to the Mercedes E350 Sport Convertible leaving the road and hitting a tree.

No other vehicle is thought to be involved.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.45pm on Tuesday night.

South Central Ambulance deployed two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle.

A spokeswoman said that the teenager, who was from Surrey, had died from her injuries at the scene.

Two younger girls aged eight and ten, who were also passengers inside the car, were treated at the scene and then taken to Southampton General Hospital as a precaution.

They were later discharged. The driver of the Mercedes was arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 34-year-old from Hordle was taken into custody where he spent yesterday being questioned by officers investigating the crash.

The road, just outside the village of Hordle in the New Forest, was reopened at 6am yesterday.
