POLICE were following a stolen car before it crashed into a police car and another vehicle on a Southampton road.

Officers were pursuing the stolen Vauxhall Zafira when it collided with a police car and a Vauxhall Astra after driving around a roundabout at what witnesses described as high speed.

Police refused to be drawn on whether they were chasing the silver-coloured Zafira when the accident happened beside the Redbridge Roundabout on Wednesday night.

The two people in the Zafira fled the scene and no arrests have been made.

A police spokesman said: "Officers had been following a Vauxhall Zafira which had been reported stolen on the Redbridge Road heading west at around 9.30pm.

"The driver of the Zafira attempted to go the wrong way around the Redbridge roundabout.

"The police car and the Zafira collided. The Zafira continued on its route along a slip road leading to Millbrook Road West.

"It then collided with a Vauxhall Astra driven by a 27-year-old man and went on to hit a traffic light. No-one was hurt in the incident."

Glyn Williams, 30, of nearby Redbridge Towers, said: "I heard the sound of tyres sliding, followed by a crash. When I looked out of the window I saw a car had turned sideways and was blocking the carriageway.

"The police closed the road for half-an-hour or maybe an hour."

Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 101, quoting reference number 44170097999.
