JENNIFER Constant and her husband Terry have sold their four-bedroom semi-detached house for a 6.25 metre-long motorhome.

Jennifer worked in marketing fundraising as an account director and her husband Terry was a export sales and operations controller at Davies Turner.

Tired of living in the “rat race” and spending £900 a month on nursery fees as well as spending hardly any time together, they decided to swap their £50,000 household income to live on the road.

They have now sold all of their possessions and have taken their toddler Ethan around Europe.

Former Sholing Girls’ School student Jennifer met her husband Terry over a cheese and Marmite sandwich at university in 2003.

This chance encounter lead to a series of adventures including two years backpacking around the world – followed by the birth of their son.

The couple are no strangers to going against the norm. Six years ago they hit the headlines when they had a Marmite-themed wedding.

Jennifer said: “The main reason we did it was because we didn’t see each other and I was putting my little one in nursery all day.

“We were paying our bills, working long hours and I felt like, ‘is this all there is to life?’

“So we decided over a 24-hour period that we would turn our life around and take the plunge into a crazy adventure.”

Currently Jennifer, Terry and Ethan are living in their 2005 FIAT CI motorhome in Spain.

The couple hope to learn how to be self-sustainable which will allow them to live completely off-grid but they have no real plans for their future.

“In society there is an ideology that you to have to get a job and a mortgage but you don’t have to have that,” said the 32-year-old mother-of-one.

Jennifer and Terry are self-acclaimed travel addicts and visited more than 35 different countries while backpacking together – and now face the decision of where to go next.

“You have to take risks in life. We have both got degrees and it seems that whatever degree you get, you end up in a nine-to-five job,” said 36-year-old Terry.

The couple had never spent any time in a motor home prior to purchasing their vehicle.

They have now begun volunteering in order to get more experience in self-sustainability, which has also allowed Ethan to play with children from other cultures.

“It’s important to make sure that my son is happy and healthy and eating right.

“I think we’ve been desperate to show him how amazing our world is.

“We were so disillusioned with the craziness and pressure of normal life. I was doing twelve-hour days just to keep a roof over our heads.

“It was so stressful and frustrating as I hardly ever saw my little boy.

“We want our son to experience the world before he gets tied down,” said Terry.

The family have been living on a vegetarian diet and, at times, have faced difficulties in finding meatless dishes in Europe.

“After taking him on holiday to Croatia, visiting nine cities in ten days, we could tell he loved it, so a few months later, we made the huge decision to sell everything, I mean everything, and move from a large four-bed semi into a 6.25m motorhome.”

They have now been on the road for five weeks and have covered the northern coast of Spain then travelled to Barcelona.

Currently, the family are situated just outside of Valencia.

Jennifer’s family still live in Southampton and she says because of this no matter where they go, the city will always be their home.
