Delays for rail passengers travelling to London Waterloo

Delays for rail passengers Delays for rail passengers

TRAIN passengers in the south are facing travel chaos today due to a mechanical fault.

Five coaches of the 9.38am from Southampton Parkway to London Waterloo have been abandoned at Basingstoke.

Passengers have reported being herded through carriages on board the South West train service as the train was shortened from 10 carriages to five.

The delays means passengers are expected to arrive 40 minutes late at Waterloo.

In a statement, SWT said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers. "

Delays for rail passengers is hardly a news story in Hampshire, is it...

I'm curious as to the use of the word 'abandoned' though- anyone know what happened here?

as each section of a train is usually 5 units I can only assume that this train was 10 units formed of 2 units of 5, one of those units must have had a fault of some sort which required it to be withdrawn from service therefore instead of cancelling the whole train, move people from the failed 5 units into the running 5 and let it continue - probably the best solution in those circumstances.

Wow, this makes two days in a row, doesn't it? As an American visitor to Southampton (I have family there) I would have loved to take the train to London, but the prices were so ridiculous I chose to take a bus instead. For that kind of money, you should be getting reliable service!

It gets worse. Train companies get to set their own standard of "late", and if a train is close to being "late" they often just say it was cancelled, and it ends up being "on time" as the next train.

This was only one train and it was not mechanical, it was just a fault on the train management computer, there have been other problems that are heat related, wrong kind of sun! There have many many more stories about road accidents, yet another on the M27/M3 today causing delays, it's swings and roundabouts whether you get there quicker by road or rail these days. Bus travel probably is cheaper if you are lucky enough to get one going where you want to go!

Bus travel is not always cheaper. A train return from Hedge End to Eastleigh is £3.30 (peak), a bus return is £5.00.

I was thinking more of longer distance travel, but it does pay to shop around, the problem on the Railway is finding someone that can sell you the most appropriate ticket for your needs, with so many variations and different uncordinated TOCs operating it is difficult to get a fair deal.
