Southampton's 2012 Naked bike ride dedicated to late cyclist Mark Brummell

CYCLISTS are gearing up to strip off for a serious cause.

Around 150 campaigners are expected to ride the streets of Southampton next week sporting nothing but their birthday suits for this year’s Naked Bike Ride.

They will set out from Southampton Common for a sixth consecutive year in a cheeky protest against the world’s dependency on oil.

Organisers say this year’s event will also be dedicated to former university lecturer Mark Brummell, a member of the Southampton Cycling Campaign, who was killed in an accident while cycling in the New Forest on Monday.

The annual event, which attracted more than 100 participants last year, will take place on June 8 from 6pm. It will start on the east side of the common, opposite the junction with Omdurman Road, before heading for the city centre.

Event organiser Rob Jordan said: “Initially we encountered questions from the police about legality but it’s well established now and gets a warm welcome from nearly everyone.”

He added: “On Monday we heard of Mark’s tragic death, killed while cycling in the New Forest. Mark was a great character among Southampton’s cycling community – a long-standing and valued member of the cycling campaign and a legendary bike mechanic, who built and restored bikes for numerous friends. Friday’s ride is a great opportunity to remember a friend."

Oh good, our resident Victorians can come along and complain about their sexual ardour being aroused or whatever, and make rhetorical claims about "The Children(tm)" or whatever it is they do every year when faced with the horror that is human nakedness.

Nakedness is far preferable than the awful colours of stretch Lycra that most Nazi cyclists think looks good.
Bring it on, if the weathers cold we wont notice too much anyway.

Be careful Rob,that's what they told the young revellers on Monday!
You'll end up having your bikes confiscated and get beaten with riot batons! :)

I doubt any kind of nakedness will occur at all so let's not get excited on this one.

Dependency on oil eh? How many will turn up with a car equipped with a bike rack I wonder. Do they have anything to say on the alternatives?

Can I please remind the cyclists that although this is seen as a fun event, a certain amount of preparation and training will be required, so as to reduce the risk of injury on the day.

With this in mind, I've set up three women's cycling machines in my front room. I'd urge all woman attendees, or at least those aged between 20 and 50, to come and train at my place - any evening will do. I've set up a camcorder so that we can work on your technique, and I offer an experienced massage, free of charge.

Sorry, Higginz, working regulations require that you offer this massage to the men, too.

About 15 years ago there was a tramp who absolutely lived the dream in Southampton. He used to sit in the park outside Southampton Institute with a can of cider in one hand and his 'old chap' in the other and whenever a pert, nubile student walked past he would quite openly 'show his pleasure' to all and sundry. It's a shame he's probably dead from liver failure now because he would have bloody LOVED this.

Higginz, I think you may need a hand with that setting up of a camcorder malarkey mate....These things are soo technical these days & I may have to attend & make sure you do it correctly ;)

Oh & make sure you don't pop an eye out & watch for friction burns too of course :))

This has its knockers and is bound to be saddled with some rude remarks, cycling without a gear is hard work, hope we don't get a chain reaction, look out for those wingnuts, I think I shouldn't have spoke on the subject.
