Roadworks on Millbrook Road West in Southampton completed

The work on Millbrook Road West The work on Millbrook Road West

THEY have caused misery for thousands of motorists, but urgent roadworks to repair crash barriers on Southampton's busiest road have been completed ahead of schedule.

Southampton City Council said the work to replace more than 200 metres of the central reservation on Millbrook Road West had been finished in “record time”.

It has taken just over two weeks for contractors Balfour Beatty to complete the work, which the authority had said needed to be done in time for Saturday's visit of the Olympic torch relay.

One lane in each direction has been closed between Millbrook flyover and Waterhouse Lane throughout the work, causing severe delays, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

City transport boss, Cllr Asa Thorpe said: “There's no easy way of saying this, but these works were always going to cause delays for motorists.

“Road safety is our main concern and we had a window of opportunity to replace the crash barriers.

“This work needed doing and doing urgently before someone got seriously hurt. I apologise again for the delays caused and thank motorists for their patience over the last week.”

According to the map of the Olympic Torch Relay, the route will go nowhere near Millbrook Road.

Well done for finishing in record time. I have just heard on Wave105 that the Traffic Management is still in place and will be removed over night, just to warn anyone who thinks it may be a clear run tonight.

If there had been anyone working on it for the last week it could have been finished sooner. I have endured nearly 2 weeks of very late buses and been late for picking my child up from school and not once have I seen so much as a single workman.

Concrete takes a while to dry, they tend to use quite a lot of concrete when placing safety barriers, so am guessing they went off to do other jobs whilst waiting.

You could argue they could have opened the road whilst waiting for it to dry, but then for safety reasons how would they be able to monitor the drying process if the safety measures are removed?

It's completed early, for which we should be thankful :-)

the English council worker can still be seen leaning against his shovel, while the Polish contractors back up the tools as they are all finished in "record" time....

You know they will need to come back again at a later date and redo all off it again.
they never replace the whole block of concrete just about 6 inches around the post, the rest of the block is still the same block and could have mirco fractures.
It takes about 10 days after the concrete has set to become nearly max strenght, it would still be class as green concrete up two years after.
But yes one good thing is that they have finished a day earier, all they need to do now is get the Romsey road finished.

Dear God!!!!!! Were you pouring the concrete and over seeing?

I bet TUSC would have ensured there would be no delays and the job would be done properly to last at least a million years.

You are seriously doing my head in with your know-it-all attitude!

Finished "early", eh? Well, doesn't that depend on how long you said they were going to take in the first place? Make a nice, safe estimate and then it sounds good to say you've finished "early".

Shocking disruption and completely incompetent council.

Do you know what... Some people are never happy!!! I bet if the road works had finished late people would be on here moaning about that too. At least this politician has admitted the work needed doing, apologised for it taking place and then told the people of Southampton they finished early! What do you people want... Blood? It's a sad state of affairs when a few road works annoy you that much, get a life.
