CYCLING remains in the news with the Tour de France and its UK launch still in the public memory.

Here in Hampshire the pastime and sometime sport can be controversial.

In the New Forest we have seen strong protests against mass cycling events. There have even been cases of abuse towards cyclists and a few incidents of sabotage.

But there can be no pretence that cycling as a form of transport is a preferable way to go from A to B where conditions are right.

Reducing traffic, keeping fit, keeping down commuting costs and helping to combat air pollution are all viable reasons why taking to two wheels and pedal power is to be encouraged.

It is gratifying, then, that the county has been recognised by the government for its work in this area.

As this paper reports today (page 14) some £3m has been allocated to Southampton and Hampshire authorities to continue projects aimed at encouraging both cycling and the use of public transport.

The problems faced in helping more of us to leave the car at home are large. But efforts are bringing results as we edge towards a more friendly form of getting around our towns, cities and countryside.
