YOU have to ask what all the fuss was about.

As this paper reports today, plans to create fast food outlets and other shopping at Totton’s Rushington roundabout site appear to have been put on hold, maybe shelved and possibly put into the long grass.

This is strange after years of hard fighting by developers to overcome local opposition to have the site for a KFC eatery and Costa Coffee outlet.

Certainly local authority councillors were split over whether the plans should go ahead.

In the end the development was only given the go-ahead when all opposition was nullified.

Now, having overcome all opposition it appears the developers have been thwarted for now by economic concerns.

One of the proposed traders looks to have pulled out.

Whether the controversial development will now finally go ahead remains to be seen. But the whole saga is a lesson in how to set a community on edge for commercial concerns that in the end are not as stable as would be portrayed.
