THOUSANDS of women got down and dirty or dressed up in pink in Southampton as they raced for life in aid of a good cause.

Over the course of the weekend women ran, walked, or slipped and slided their way through the Common for Race for Life.

It was the return of the annual event with some running in memory of family members of friends who had lost their battle against cancer.

While for many other it was just a chance to raise money in aid of a good cause and have fun.

Lynda Brown was joined by the friends of her daughter Lucy Goddard, a reception teacher at Woolston Infants School who died of breast cancer last year, despite taking part in the 2014 event.

Organisers from Cancer Research UK, which both events were in aid of, also held the Pretty Muddy event on Saturday when women turned their pink outfits into a filthy shade of brown.

The 5KM route featured a slushy series of obstacles including tyres, a mud bath covered in ropes and rubber hurdles climaxing in a huge mud slide – transforming their pink outfits into a filthy shade of brown.

Those taking part in the Pretty Muddy event included the Team Sholing Girls group running in memory of Southampton mum Joanne Craddock, 30, who died after a battle with breast cancer last year.

Organiser Liz Frisbee said: “We’re really happy with how things have gone. Everyone has a reason for doing it, but it’s a really fun event. There’s so many people who want to make a difference.”
