THE magic of Christmas has come early at one of Hampshire’s biggest department stores.

There may be 71 days to go to the big day but thousands of shoppers are this morning catching a glimpse of hundreds of spectacular festive lights switched on at John Lewis in Southampton.

The magnificent display was put together by abseiling teams and features 1.5km of lights in the atrium and Place to Eat restaurant and a further 4km in the glass lift window.

There are also 5,181 individual decorations in the store’s walkways which include 894 sprouts and 480 metres of fairy lights using two scaffolding towers.

Meanwhile there are 500 individual decorations in the atrium itself.

Springfield Decorations and Display Ltd put together the display using abseiling crews to access the most difficult to reach points.

Decorations in the walkways were installed by the local Visual Merchandising Springfield has hung over 50KM of lights and 12Km of decoration rigging in John Lewis atriums nationwide.
