HAMPSHIRE put out the flags as Princess Anne came to open establishments for the old and the young.

The princess flew in to Lordshill by helicopter where she opened Oaklands Community School in 1983.

She was given a warm welcome from the school’s 400 pupils and thousands of children from nearby first and middle schools.

After watching a concert put on by the children, the princess unveiled a plaque and sat down for lunch before leaving for her next destination – The New Forest.

She was welcomed to Lyndhurst by a sea of red, white and blue flags and bunting outside Cranleigh Paddock, a housing project for old people.

She toured the £650,000 complex, chatting with local dignitaries and the majority of the 60 residents before unveiling a plaque.

Next stop was Lymington hospital where children showered her with flowers.

From the hospital the royal entourage went down the road to the infirmary where the princess formally opened the £750,000 day hospital.
