VIDEO game giant Nintendo has revealed that its Wii console, the top Christmas gift in the UK, is responsible for doubling profits.

The Japanese firm has now sold more than 20 million Wii machines worldwide, helping to generate profits of £1.23 billion for the first three-quarters of the year.

Wii, home to titles such as Super Mario Galaxies and Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, pictured, has been a boon to Hampshirebased software retailer Game.

Game, which has 15 Hampshire stores, including one at WestQuay, Southampton, and employs up to 200 people at its Basingstoke HQ, reported Christmas sales up 32 per cent year on year, largely thanks to the popularity of the Wii system.
