PUPILS at a Southampton primary school have been left devastated after vandals wrecked their outdoor writing area.
The area at Redbridge Primary School was destroyed by two youngsters wearing hoodies on Saturday evening.
The vandals picked up tree trunks that were being used as seats and threw them through benches in the area, which was built to encourage children to enjoy writing in their own time.
Head teacher Jane Shiers, pictured surveying the damage with pupils, said the children were devastated.
She said: “The whole school worked towards making the writing area possible and Homebase and B&Q donated the benches.
“The children loved it. They are absolutely gutted and can’t understand why anyone would have done this.”
Mrs Shiers added: “The sad thing is that the school can’t afford to pay for the area to be built again.”
A police spokesman said an investigation was now under way and urged anyone with information to contact Shirley Police Station on 0845 045 4545.
