THERE were no horrific injuries or bloodied wounds.
Just a few scratches to his face and a missing tooth were all he had to show for being the victim of an intimidating and cowardly attack by a gang of racist youths.
But it was Gregory Fernandes’ heart that proved he had literally been “scared to death” when he collapsed and died just moments after the ordeal.
Today the teenagers responsible are facing prison terms after pleading guilty to their parts in the trouble that led to the death of the Indian sailor. It is the first time anyone has been convicted in the county for causing death induced by fright and stress – and one of only a handful of similar prosecutions nationwide.
Chay Fields, Daniel Rogers and Stephen Pritchard all admitted manslaughter during a hearing at Winchester Crown Court yesterday, halting a trial which was about to get under way. They will be sentenced next month.
