STAYING afloat is the priority for those rafters taking part in a charity raft race along the River Itchen in Southampton.
St Denys Community Association will launch its second annual raft race on Sunday to help raise funds for the children's Christmas party. Teams of brave rafters will take to the water in their home-made tubs, trying to avoid the eggs and flour hurled at them by spectators.
Martin Gentry, organiser of the race, said: "Even before the rafts get to the start line they're pelted with flour and eggs and all sorts. It's a race in the loosest sense of the word, I've never seen anything like it. It's all good fun and it's really about getting some money together so we can put on a decent Christmas party for some of the local kids."
The race begins at 3pm along the banks of the River Itchen, beside Riverside Park
