Royal Pier redevelopment is back on the agenda
A GRAND vision to transform Southampton's derelict Royal Pier is back on the agenda after council chiefs and port bosses ended their feud over the redevelopment.
Secret talks have been held about a new scaled-down proposal to redesign the key site through housing, shops, bars, restaurants and enhancing the public space, the Daily Echo can reveal.
Two rival developers have come up with several different schemes on how best to utilise the derelict pier, pictured, and nearby Mayflower Park. However, the proposals do not include the Town Quay.
| The city is about to undergo it's biggest revamp since the end of the Second World War | |
|
Redeveloping the pier - which was badly damaged in a fire in 1992 - is central to the council's plan to reconnect the city centre with the waterfront.
The news comes as Southampton enters its biggest period of redevelopment since reconstruction work after the Second World War. A sea of cranes will dominate the city in the coming years as major developments costing £1.5 billion will change the skyline forever.

And about time too. Both parties should be ashamed of themselves allowing this stupid bickering to go on for so long.
It has so damaged our city and is a disgrace to see when on the water and on land.
Just see what Portsmouth have done with Gunwharf Quay, if they need some examples of what Southampton MUST have.

Why oh Why put more housing there?
Rebuild the pier, maybe add a restaurant and leave it at that. Give the space for people to walk around. If people want shops or bars, let them go to West Quay or Oxford Road.
Leave the space open to all and not more developments.
Maybe now we have an opportunity to do something nice for all. WE only have 1 chance so lets get it right.

I have absolutely no doubt that for "housing" read "flats/luxury apartments" which is the one thing that Southampton DOES NOT NEED ! The imbalance of housing provision is destroying and already damaged society and simply highlights the blinkered vision, (or perhaps "obsession" would be more appropriate) of the Council's planning policies. With the old Vospers site, the old Tyrell's site, the proposed Ice Rink site, the old Telephone building, the Custom House all being turned over to flats, surely it is time to call a halt and provide accomodation for families with children with gardens...Yes I have said it before...but this is getting ridiculous!

I appreciate your point 'Fullof's but obviously Southampton does need these sorts of places, otherwise developers wouldn't be willing to plough huge amounts of cash into these schemes.
If people are willing to buy these places, then there is a need - even if there is (quite rightly, IMO) perceived to be a bigger need for other types of accommodation.

A "scaled down development" means it will be rubbish. The old "scaled up" one was hardly inspiring. So we'll end up with yet more mid-rise flats, constructed using the cheapest methods around, with a bit of coloured cladding slapped on the outside to try to make it less square than what it really is.
Unfortunately, the city councillors and architects in Southampton don't have a clue about what makes good modern architecture and the city is being left behind by nearly every other city of similar size in the country.

Our city has great heritage sites that the council has squandered for years. now they are to be hidden in a sea of even more bloody flats. No doubt the owners of those flats will face hours of delay getting to their homes because of the inept traffic manamagement we endure. No Southampton. Sort out the traffic problems and if you are going to develop the area, give us low rise, not flats and buildings in keeping with our historic past.

Mr Tupper, do you want some mock tudor houses then? We have enough of those in Lordswood and West End.
Or some more concrete eyesores like the civic centre and shopping precient thanks to German bombers?
I don't really think Soton has that many historic buildings of note.
The city needs to look forward, not backwards as far as architecture goes.

Whilst we have not seen any plans on what is currently being discussed, previous plans included:
* Extending the park by reclaiming area by extending into a part Southampton water (between the Pier and 101 Berth)
* Encouraging Resturants and refreshments outlets to encourage more use of this public space and improve facilities.
* Build a bigger area for more people to use whilst also giving the boat show more land as West Quey developments is taking this away. (By not doing this, we could loose the boat show and the revenue it brings to the city)
Currently, no mention of housing !!!!

Whatever happened to the proposed new Maritime Centre **** Titanic Museum? I thought the Pier was becoming a Kuti's restaurant?
One day we will get something decent in this city and not the piecemeal effort we are dished up at the moment. None of these proposed developments ever looks like they did on the plans. It loathes me to say that Gunwharf Quay is what Ocean Village should have been 15 years before.

Perhaps we could build a fun fair to better the one that is at Southsea.
I am sure we could find a couple of swings from somewhere.

I think you'll find I suggested on Room 101 that Southsea should be knocked into the sea - Skate land would follow and slide into the sea too as it would have nothing to prop it up - stop stealing my ideas, yes you may have changed the details but the essence is the same and there is such a thing as copyright laws - @rs3h0l3

why can't we keep some of these sites as open as possible.
Stop building on every piece of land the council want to sell.
Restore or develop the Pier but don't screw up Mayflower park.
Southampton used to be fantastic for parks and open spaces - don't ruin our city's history and spoil our future.

Aren't they going to build shops there as well? If you like the view from Mayflower Park you'll be able to see it through the shop window, when you're standing at the check-out.

I heard that it was going to be a casino or Thai restaurant(Kuti?)
Lets hope it's not another seaside Millionaire's Row of overpriced flats etc.
Civic Centre? Great bit of architecture and that clock (spelt right)tower is a fine phallic is a great symbol of Soton's virility!!

Southampton is a great city with so many assets that it loses focus. We have open spaces.we have good road links.we also have weston shore and have a diverse city.As well as the best shopping centre in the south etc...but what we lack is originality.that is where portsmouth have overtaken us.How many spinnaker towers are thier in the uk(which now is the focal point of south today/meridian).i would like to see the woolston project done on a massive scale.the reason being people like to be part of the biggest and the best.gunwhalf is what ocean village should of been and weston shore should be the new southsea.integrate buses and trains services better,Maybe have a light rail system runing from hythe across to hamble and around hedge-end,eastliegh,
chandlers ford etc. Also i have heard of vaults that run under the bargate,if it is true open them up to public.i think the ring around southampton from hythe to hamble should be part of a greater southampton plan where travaling and assets are shared and integrated(everythin
g is to fragmented at the moment). All of the above will bring new people with fresh ideas to the city and businesses will follow.Southampton is to much of a 9-5 city that caters only for the mainstream.any successful city in the world has done so by the minority which have different demands to mainstreamers.

so where is the wow factor in a city of cranes?
Southampton does not need more boring blocks of flats which are then bought to let.
Southampton has nothing to offer really and they want to spoil the parks - ridiculous. I went back to Brighton yesterday - the shops are far better, the bus service is superior, the whole city is alive with lively people.
