Plans for city's Royal Pier in tatters

THE proposed multi-million pound redevelopment of the Royal Pier in Southampton has collapsed.

Port bosses abandoned plans for a prestige waterfront development featuring bars, restaurants and at least 1,000 flats.

An ambitious vision for a multi-million pound residential and leisure development rising on the pier and land reclaimed from the seabed, opposite Mayflower Park, now lie in tatters for a third time in two years.

Months of high level meetings between Associated British Ports and major developers now appear to be a waste of time as it was announced nothing had been agreed.

Port director Doug Morrison said it had been a painful process, but the proposal, worth several hundred million pounds, would not have made enough money to be viable.

The major stumbling block was the £20m cost of land reclamation to secure the future of the Southampton Boat Show. The prestige event was in danger of being left homeless as West Quay Phase Three is due to rise on land relied on by organisers.

Instead, the remains of the pier will now be demolished to make way for new berth moorings to accommodate more boats in the water during the ten-day event. ABP also extended the boat show's licence to use the waterfront at berth 101 indefinitely.

The announcement was a major blow for Southampton City Council who regarded the pier and park as the flagship project in its dream of reconnecting the city with the waterfront.

Councillor Royston Smith, Cabinet member for economic development, said the fact the proposals were not going forward was a disappointment, but securing the future of the boat show was a positive outcome.

Well done the council for letting another chance to promote the city fail - you're true heroes. It's getting tempting to say "i live near Portsmouth" these days; no doubt get laughed at less!!

Im not even sure these people could arrange a p*** up in a brewery, if they managed to find it to start!!

If the boat show say jump etc etc.
Why does a ten day boat show that very few local people go to take precedent over a development which would be there for a minimum of 50 years. the sooner the boat show goes to portsmouth the better

When the idea was first announced I said "I'll believe it when I see it" and "Don't make me larff" and words to that effect.

    Robert scores again!

It's amazing how much money Southampton seems to waste looking into things that never happen...

I think that you will find that a lot of local people attend the boat show.
It makes a very good day out.

Why don't people read what they've written before they hit the post button?

the pier is the only thing that lets the water front down as for the berth 101 being used for mooring yet again people will be ferether away from the cruise ship and all other ships at is the only vanage point southampton is a dock city but u cant get near any of the ships they is more to southampton then the boat show so why should they get there way and why should more empty boat moorings be built when they are ONLY used for HOW MANY WEEKS A YEAR love coming to your city every year but empty yaught moorings would make it more of an eye saw as it is now

The City has for the last 30 years made a complete mess of the waterfront areas.

Ocean Village = a mess and still not finished and because of that, lost the round the world races.

Town Quay = Wasted opportunity since day one and already looking ramshackled and ugly

Royal Pier = an eyesore and will continue to be so for years

Woolston Riverside = The next one on the list, with the proposed development currently in danger of falling through, meaning a vast area of land will be wasteland for many more years.

    Sort it out Council

Get one project finished at a time rather than fail at several!

Always doomed to failure for 2 reasons, the Council and ABP. Perhaps it's time the boat show moved down to Gun Wharf Quays where at least it'd be managed properly. Give the waterfront back to the city.
