IT’S been less than a fortnight since runners descended on Southampton for this year’s marathon.

But bosses behind the annual sporting event have already announced plans for 2019.

Organisers behind the ABP Southampton Marathon say next year’s event will take place on April 28.

The event, which this year brought an estimated 30,000 visitors to the city and as much as £1m to the local economy, will again feature full and half marathon distances, as well as a 10k option and one-mile fun run.

But organisers are considering adding an extra 500 spaces in the 10k for 2019, after entries sold out in record time this year.

If the additional spaces are made available it’ll make it the biggest 10k in Hampshire – a title currently held by the Eastleigh 10k.

Race director Chris Rees said: “We were absolutely bowled over by the response to this year’s event and we’re already busy planning 2019 so runners can get their entries in and start training.”

“Some keen runners have signed up already and, with memories of last weekend still in our minds, it’s a great time to sign up.“We’d particularly urge those considering running the 10k to sign up quickly, considering how fast it sold out last year.”

Alastair Welch, director of ABP Southampton, the event’s principle sponsor, said: “We are delighted to see the ABP Southampton Marathon go from strength to strength each year.

“The city of Southampton has really taken this event to its heart and it is great to see so many people getting involved, cheered on by friends, family and the wonderful Mile Makers drawn from community groups across the city.”

The announcement of next year’s date is the first time ABP Southampton Marathon has beaten the London Marathon to the punch in announcing its date.

The two events have fallen on the same day for the last four years – the last two of which have included the full marathon distance in Southampton.

Early bird discounts are available for those keen enough to sign up a year ahead of the run.
