Fans have their say on Saints' plight
4:46pm Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Sport
The following is a letter received by the Echo from a Saints season-ticket holder:
Having sat through most of our games, home and away, I know one thing…this is going to lead to relegation. Our time in that Premier League is going to be very short lived and may well end in an embarrassment. We managed our promotion last season because of momentum, our resources and two players, Lambert and Lallana. We were by no means the outstanding team in that league.
Now, Cortese and his nonsense about Europe was always pie in the sky and has had a damaging effect on our expectations.
After our fiasco at Upton Park, none of us can be under any illusions any more. We are in a horrible survival scrap for which we are ill equipped. Adkins did wonders to take us this far in so short a time but we do need to question a few of his decisions this season.
- Our defence was suspect in the Championship. We overcame that by simply scoring more goals that the opposition. Yet we all knew this wasn’t going to work for one minute in the Premiership. WHY oh WHY didn’t he strengthen our back four?
- Buying Sharp and Rodrigues seems baffling. Even more so, when Sharp is then loaned out. l His team selections seems equally strange. Lambert is our talisman. When Adkins wants to play him only second half, make sure he has wingers who can give him the ammunition.
- Adkins leaves his substitutions too late. I was at Everton and to start changing things in the 80th minute when we are 3 – 1 down and well beaten smacks of incompetence. As for the Man U game……
- Lallana is not captain material. At Everton we were sat pitch level, and it was noticeable how little, or no, screaming and shouting there was in our back for. No communication at all.
Where do we go from here? Should Adkins go? If he does get the push his successor is still left with a good Championship side but very average, if not bad, Premiership side.
He is never going to make that back four perform miracles. Do we hang on to the transfer window and hope we are not too far adrift so we can sort the defence out? Does NA have a plan B?
The simple arithmetic is frightening ...to gain a point we have to score three!
Are the fans going to stay patient? I, for one, can handle a few seasons in the Championship as long as there is a long term, coherent strategy. The Premier League is great if you have very, very deep pockets (for clubs and fans alike). It is not a level playing field. Should we be a yo yo club for a few seasons and stay in a healthy financial state, I shall not complain in the slightest.
I am staying loyal for the simple reason that I cannot see a new manager do any better. But my patience is wearing thin.
Martin van Tuyl Kingsland, season ticket holder.

His substitutions have been poor, his defence is poor and buying J-Rod was a mistake as he is out of his depth.
Why did we loan out our top pre-season scorer? Sharp and Lambert would have been a strong front line.
But, as you said, our defence is embarrassing, although it looked strong first half v west ham.
So, lets see how we do this Saturday. A big loss and I think it's bye bye, an entertaining 4-3 loss might give him another week, draw will mean a week, a win will mean a November employment.
But please... no Hoddle!
By the way, what's Mr Keegan up to?
Good luck Saints, still proud of you out here in Norway!

We didn't simply out-score the opposition in the Championship. We kept many clean sheets and we broke numerous club records in the process over the last two seasons. However, I do believe that we got out of jail a few times (like Leeds away as an extreme example). Where Championship players miss numerous chances, Premiership ones do not.
We have been prone to the odd 'off day' like Leicester at home and Blackpool away for example. But, in the Premiership these have proven to be more embarrassing, like Arsenal and West Ham away.
We played so well against Man U and were very unlucky not to take anything from the game and I thought we were also unlucky against Wigan.
We will concede goals but we can bring in quality defenders in January. With the cash available in the Premiership (especially from next season) it is worth spending the money.... We will inevitably sell playersif we are eventually relegated.
My main concern is that the momentum is run out and confidence appears to be low at the moment.

We have been the stand out team in each of the two divisions we previously played in.
We are still probably in at least the top 5 best footballing sides in the premiership.
As much as it might suit the Echo and some of our more ignorant fans we are not in such a 'Plight'
We have a young talented manager (easily the best outside of the premiership) who will develop along with his team this season and will finish safely above the relegation zone.
We are far better equipped for survival in this league than the doom and gloom merchants will have you believe.
Really bored now of the Echo's pathetic attempts to cause unrest and disharmony.
I'd hate to work in your environment in tough times imagine all the negativity and depressives wallowing in their own poor luck!

I just hope that being a "fair" "balanced" no agenda" paper that when a letter is received supporting Adkins that it is also published in FULL
Who along with me suspect's it won't be?
Before anyone says if you don't like it don't comment, it has been put up to cause discussion, provoke a reaction so I am
ONE NIGEL ADKINS
THERE IS ONLY ONE NIGEL ADKINS
Before I get shouted down about being "deluded" by MRGA and GHK whatever your number is, I'll ask this:
Lawrie McMenemy
Chris Nichol
Ian Branfoot
David Jones
Glen Hoddle
Stuart Grey
Gordon Strachan
Paul Sturrock
Steve Wigley
Harry Redknapp
Jan Poortvliet
Mark Wotte
Alan Pardew
or Nigel Adkins ......
I suspect that unlike me you won't have seen Football at the Dell or St Mary's under these
Personally only Strachan beats him, I was too young to really remember the Lawrie years (I started in 1983 at 8 years old)
We have a golden manager lets get behind him, support him and march on together. 17th is good enough for me.

Once again;
IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
The WH game was a clear eye-opener and hopefully will cause a change for the good, not sure why NA would come out and publicly admit he is unsure of how long he has? and some of the decisions are indeed baffling, as though someone else is having a decisive influence on those decisions?

After all the heartache of the Lowe years and the aftermath, we are now in severe danger of throwing all the hard away again because of sheer stubbornness.
NA has done wonders to get us where we are, but....he needs to face up to reality. All very well saying we play nice football but what is the point if we get trounced every week.
All very well saying November will get easier but I seem to remember the last time we went down from the prem. We managed to scrape draws at home and got beaten on our travels then.

Speaking as someone who has written a letter to the Echo previously about how Saints should learn to stick together and give NA a chance to put things right - funny how they chose not to publish that (I suspect it's because I was critical of the Echo itself, among other things).
I'm seriously beginning to wonder whether it's time for fans to start officially boycotting the Echo site and newspaper. It's the only way they're going to learn that the paper and the Club have to work TOGETHER.
Why is anyone surprised that the Club don't communicate with this rag?

Has he the guts to do it, if he did he would go from zero to hero in my opinion.

Some one with this exact name is listed as leaving in BH13 - the postcode that includes our 'Arry's Sanbanks home. Coincidence or wind up? Either way it took me 2 mins to get this info. I wonder how deeply the Echo researched before publishing.....

Blind faith is not the answer.Nor is blind panic after 8 games. I too am 'Disgusted' mainly by donuts who call themselves fans who are impatient have no understanding of the game and will happily cry out for a change in management during what should be viewed as the most exciting period of development we've seen at the club for the last 10 years.

Thank goodness true saints football fans are more positive, they keep misgivings to themselves and have the balls to sing their heads off to the whistle. You absolute traitor Van Tool.. when we are in europe I hope you are banned!!!! shove your season ticket and stay away.

Publishing a letter from one of the 20% dissenters is the height of unfair stupidity. Negative people are always there at game slagging the team and successive managers. 2 years ago I flew 12,500 miles to watch saint and had them dotted all around me calling Pards clueless and slagging Rickie Lambert calling him a fat useless pedestrian. They go to matches to slag and boo and have their say and now it seems the Echo has joined in.

I see Jay Rod as a player for the future getting time on the pitch to develop whilst Rickie is kept fresh for impact in rotation.. No problem with that at all. Smashing as Rickie is, he is 30yrs old, we are not a one man team and we are looking to the future.
Billy Sharp was slower on the turn and lacks the instinct of Rickie.. Jay has the guile and speed required to step up for the wider game, he reminds me of a young Martin Chivers and given a go he'll prove it.
All your comments were similar to those thrown at Alan Pardew when he took so long to get off the mark and recoup the -10. and I am so glad they didn't throw him out after 8 or 9 games.
I stand by my belief in Nigel now and for the future. By saying you can;t see anyone else around that could make a difference at the moment you shoot yourself right in the foot.... There is no better manager for Saints at the moment... Your Rafa's, Vialli's, Keegan's etc... no way would we want them at Saints.
It's a good time and use the opportunity to ask people who did ask for change one straight question as yet unanswered by any of the dissenters:
Who would you have instead?
And why would you want change after so few games bearing in mind that Keegan lost his first 8 games on his return to Newcastle using 442 and only started to win using 433?
I believe some players need to step up or get shipped out in the summer window but have utter (not blind) faith in management to do that without advice from Martin Van Tuyl et al..

I am not a season ticket holder and have never been one however I have followed the Saints in Australia since the 1976 season. All I can think of in the last two years in league one and the championship the Saints were awesome. I cannot fault anything that Martin says and I agree with him 80 per cent. I can't see how you can pay monkeys peanuts and expect them to perform. I am not making fun of our team but most of them are just not Premier league quality. I would say around 6-8 of the squad possibly would make it. For sure Davis, Lallana, Ramirez and Lambert. I would make Lambert our captain, I am so stunned he is not playing a full game. Is he tired or unfit what is going on with that. Lallana as good as he is. he is not captain material. Part of the reason this team is experiencing the problems is because the team is not stable with strange choices of positions and choices. I however disagree with not replacing the manager sooner than later. A quality manager can turn things around and the stranger choices and strategies would disappear. I truly hope having said all this that the whole squad and Manager prove me wrong and I would love egg on my face. But don't do it for me do it for yourselves, however I don't doubt one bit the effort hasn't been there I just think most of the players are not PL standard.
The fact we manager to win back to back promotions from League 1 and the Championship does not mean we are equipped for the Premiership.
Of course Nigel has done wonders but he is going to have to adopt a far more pragmatic approach.

Plenty of good points and a few not so good, don't agree with a lot of it, but I respect the right to that view. Me, I cannot see any future in sacking NA, we still have a reasonable chance of at least finishing 17th, but the disruption now of changing a manager, who is on a difficult learning curve, would in my opinion be a recipe for disaster. The best that genuine Saints supporters can do is to give 100%, anything less would be disgraceful.
