Adkins urged to Shaw up defence

Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Nigel Adkins has been urged to Shaw up his leaky defence – by giving one of the most promising youngsters at the club his Premier League debut.

England youth international Luke Shaw, 17, has been constantly linked to the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the past 18 months.

The left-back is still waiting to make his Saints league debut, but has played in FA Cup and League Cup ties.

Shaw has been injured but was due to return to training today.

And one of Adkins’ biggest fans, former Dell striker Gordon Watson, believes the youngster should be given his chance in a bid to improve Saints’ dismal defensive record – 24 goals conceded in just eight top flight games.

Watson, above right, said: “I would play Luke Shaw.

“Why not? He would be a left back playing at left back.

Danny Fox has struggled this season and Maya Yoshida has not coped well there either.

“Something needs to change.

“What’s the worst that could happen – we lose again?”

The right-footed Yoshida appeared at left back during last weekend’s 4-1 loss at West Ham, after deputising at right back in Saints’ previous Premier League game at home to Fulham.

“We don’t need to put square pegs in round holes,” said Watson.

“Let’s see if Luke Shaw is good enough, let’s see why Arsenal have supposedly been keen to sign the kid.”

Watson, a former Leicester scout under ex-Saints boss Nigel Pearson, is a huge supporter of Adkins.

He was heartened to see most Saints fans appear to back his view – 78 per cent of around 3,000 supporters wanting Adkins to stay in a Daily Echo poll this week.

“That was 22 per cent less than it should have been,” said Watson.

“Nigel Adkins is the reason why Saints are in the Premier League.

“We should all remember where we were two years ago.

“We should not let eight weeks of unsettled results rip up two successful years.

“Even if Saints finished bottom of the league with only 10 points, I would not sack Nigel Adkins, no way.”

I see the Echo have contrived to turn a story supposedly about Shaw into another should Adkins stay or go one. It's time to stop it now you've milked it to the max and will really p!ss people off if you don't change tune.

Nigel has shown that he is more than happy to being the youngsters through - Oxo and JWP - he is also aware we are weak at LB. Maybe just maybe Shaw isn't ready and doesn't need to be destroyed by some flying winger wrecking his confidence?

Yoshida is not right footed as mentioned in the article. Or at least I don't think so after watching the Fulham game.

Give the lad a go away at West Brom next week if he's only just returning from injury

Apart from the fact that he is currently njured you mean....? I think you will find Yoshida quite comfortable on the left. Has Watson ever actually seen Shaw play? Other than that - very well researched article!

I've never seen Luke play but I struggle to see how a 17 year old could possibly be the answer to all our defensive problems.

As is the norm with most modern day full backs he's probably better going forward than he is defending but I could be wrong.

He is most defenitely one for the future and I would hate to see his confidence take a battering by being part of a defensive unit that is really struggling right now.

I can see him getting a game in the cups and maybe the league towards the end of the season if we are safe or already down. I think next season will be a big season for the lad. I just hope it's in the prem with us and not the gooners!!

I won't I also believe NA has very little time to turn his job around as I have previously posted and if I'm completely honest i'm not completely sure if the bloke is up to it or not. With his subs and formations etc but I do not see the point in repeating the same thing on every new story on this website. I started questioning him during the Fulham game when the subs were made and seen/read nothing to change my mind since

The question I'd have to ask is why we don't field the teams which did so well against the Manchester clubs? They were more than able to match those two leviathans and I think, had we stuck with that line up, we could now have more points on the board. JWP is a good midfielder, young and tracks back - he should be included.

Having said all that, I've seen Luke play a few times. He's an attacking left back. He can be very good but had a bit of an off day vs Stevenage.

I don't think he's fit as he's been withdrawn from U18 but it could shatter his confidence if he had a torrid time vs Lennon.

I'm glad I'm not too afflicted with logic. Logic would not allow me to go to the match against Spurs with much hope - especially after the downer last Saturday.

But after a few glum days being focused on "how it is" that cheery "how it could be" feeling is back.

This time two years ago our Div 1 home match was against Dagenham & Redbridge. Oh well of course
that's how it was. Two years on it's Premier League against Spurs - the great place where our wildest hopes said it could be.

Let's get behind Nigel and the team from the start on Sunday. And regardless of the result, after what we went through just a few years ago, we know that as long as we don't give up we haven't failed.

Injuries will heal with time, further signings can be made with time. We just got to hang on in there, it will all come good. My only concern is NC, will he give Nigel the time, I do hope he does but the lack of communication with anyone outside the club is bound to lead to speculation. Im not a NC fan, I am a NA fan and a Saints fan, I'm sure given time it will all be ok, back Nigel and the team, be patient and we'll be mid table soon enough. Lets hope we are getting all our bad luck now and get the good fortune we must surely be due soon.

I think when your defence is rubbish and there's a promising young centre back desperate to play then give him a go. Seabourne wouldn't have made half the mistakes Fonte has made. He's been a joke this season apart from scoring v Fulham. I didn't rate Seabourne much but someone needs a run out. Would like to get Shaw on but he's recovering from injury and was withdrawn from the England squad. Yoshida is our best centre back so please don't play him at full back, he's terrible at full back.

I think people are being too pessimistic. After watching spurs yesterday and against chelsea I think we can get something from the game. Regards Shaw, it does not matter who you put in a team and what age they are, you need someone with experience to pull the strings. Personally with a back four with no Prem experience, the last thing I would have done is mess with the Keepers position, Nigel has his reasons no doubt but I would not have touched that unless made to. regards Yosh, he is clearly NOT a full back. Fox would be my choice even though he is not the absolute apex.

I think Adkins should be given the England managers job. He'd be a revelation. Just what we need - as Roy Hodgson is about ten years behind the times with his counter attacking 4-4-2 and we are just getting worse every tournament. Also - it might give you guys a chance to stay up - as it seems he is fixated on 4-3-3. I wonder if young Shaw will be jettisoned as he has "criticized the manager" Oh dear - a spell on the sidelines I think.

wHEN HE PLAYED AGAINST STEVENAGE he looked ok going forward but a bit suspect when put under pressure.he gave the ball away too much.no doubt he will get better but at this stage of his career it would be better to loan him out to someone like Bopurnemouth.i can remember when a young Rio Ferdinand got a hell of a lot of experience playing for the Cherries back in the 90's.Then a few seasons later Jermaine Defoe went there on loan and started banging goals in on a regular basis. Both players went on to have half decent careers both for their country and premiership clubs.
Throw Luke Shaw in to a struggling team like SAINTS and he could either become a liability and have his confidence shot away or gain valuable experience and help SAINTS climb the table.but to me on the strength of his only senior start against Stevenage he isn't quite ready yet.Hopefully though i will be proved wrong and if picked he will play a blinder and help Saints keep their first clean sheet of the season and get another 3 points.COME ON YOU REDS.

Don't think Shaw is fit, but even if he is would be a gamble to play him, if only because it could harm his long term development. We had a youngster called Martin Crainie, captained England at various levels and tipped to go all the way to the top. he played at Chelsea as a youngster scored an own goal and never looked the same player again. Confidence is everything in football. That is why we desperately need a clean sheet to give the defence something to build on. Seabourne is not a bad shout because if nothing else he is strong and at the moment we seem to be being bullied at the back.

Interesting dilemma for NA.

If he plays Shaw against Lennon, and he gets turned over, then he could put his progress back by several months.
But, if he plays Shaw against Lennon and he keeps Lennon quiet, then he could push his career forward and become the regular left back for years to come, or at least until a London club comes knocking :0(.

IMO, if he's fit enough and the only naturally left footed option for that position, then he should play.
If he's fit enough but not ready to make the step up, then why does he have a squad number?

Regarding his performance at Stevenage, I believe he was taken ill shortly after that game, so judging his ability on that one match may give a distorted view of his true capabilities.

There is also the option of using Ben Reeves at left back, as he started out in that position before moving into midfield. Just a thought.

Its about opinons, mine being the manager is useless and a fair few people agree, what is your point about a half empty stadium in silence,it normally is after 80 minutes.the fulham game was a disgrace the number of people who left before the end.I was one of the few who saw the equaliser, i bet half the numptys on here had left or were not at the game anyway.

you are right about Martin Crainie.he was capped several times at youth team level and everyone expected big things for him.Harry Ratknapp was obviously impressed with him because he signed him for Poirpoisemouth when they were on the up and we were. mainly due to harry's efforts aided and abetted by Rupert Lowe,on the slide.Crainie never became a regular down the road and moved on to Coventry for a few seasons.i think he might have moved on from there.
Regarding the problematic left back position,i think we got rid of Dan Harding too soon.Dan Seaborne played there against Sheff. Wed and did ok there in my eyes.Maybe he should be given another chance there. And what has happened to Danny Butterfield.if he is still about and fit surely worth a place on the bench.Same applies to Ryan Dickson if he is still with us.

Its about opinons, mine being the manager is useless and a fair few people agree, what is your point about a half empty stadium in silence,it normally is after 80 minutes.the fulham game was a disgrace the number of people who left before the end.I was one of the few who saw the equaliser, i bet half the numptys on here had left or were not at the game anyway.”

That's fair enough but you don't need to keep repeating yourself over and over again with regards to it. My point about a half empty stadium is you are the one that states about 'happy clappys' surely its better to get behind the club especially at times like the present

I think that every saints fan has the right to an opinion on this or any site in regards to our current situation. Not everyone will agree with each other, but we are all entitled to one.

I think that NA and NC have done a fantastic job in getting us back to the Premier league, and I for one do not want to ever go back down to the Championship let alone League 1.

I would love to see NA stay and show all his critics that he is a superb manager, but he needs to adapt and grow. As the saying goes "Adapt or die". If he chooses to stick to his "we wont change the way we play" and the fact that we are breaking "the most goals ever conceded in 8 games" record, then unfortunately he won't last.

Like NA, I want to see us playing attractive attacking football, but sometimes you need to change tactics/formations to get the result you need. A boring 1-0 win or 0-0 draw would be welcomed by all of us on sunday i am sure.

I don't want to see NA get the sack and I fully support him and our boys every time we step out onto that pitch. I certainly do not think that getting another manager in now would change a thing because who ever comes in will have the same squad as NA has.

I think we should just all stick together and support the team on Sunday and hopefully get the result we all want. A Saint win!

Up the saints :)

i will grow up just like you, as you are a fine example to everyone arent you! i shall go to a game and laugh in a players face and call him all sorts, as thats the grown up thing to do! whos spitting the dummy out? all i advised 141 to do is stop pretending and stop trying to wind up saints fans. i have lots of respect for `ptid, skating on thin ice and more glory etc etc.` as they are open about being poopey fans and despite getting loads of abuse they still turn up on here, sometimes on wind ups, sometimes with decent inputs. however if you were to bother reading the posts yesterday and the day before, you will see that 141 has taken over every thread with juvenile posts and is clearly trying to wind us up. you are right that everyone has an opinion and some are even good, unfortunately 141 has not put forward any opinions just stupid comments aimed at the fans or the manager. for the record i dont rate your opinion on any subject after your post about fox, and i really dont care if you rate mine! but as you said i am entitled to it!

Constant sniping by posters who have no more knowledge of internal workings of the club bores me.

It is not NA's fault that we have a few high-profile players out due to inury. I think that he will have a strategy to do his best with what he has to work with.

I am sure he now realises that not starting with RL last week was a blunder. Spurs will be a difficult game next Sunday but so was Arsenal for Norwich last week.

All it takes is a bit of luck sometimes.

I support my team 100% as I have for over 60 years......the whole team, the management and the fans, not just the XI on the pitch.

Seabourne is not a bad shout because if nothing else he is strong and at the moment we seem to be being bullied at the back.
you are right about Martin Crainie.he was capped several times at youth team level and everyone expected big things for him.Harry Ratknapp was obviously impressed with him because he signed him for Poirpoisemouth when they were on the up and we were. mainly due to harry's efforts aided and abetted by Rupert Lowe,on the slide.Crainie never became a regular down the road and moved on to Coventry for a few seasons.i think he might have moved on from there.
DB is supposed to be injured as well as Frazer!. Ryan's out on loan in the lower divisions - Yeovil anyone? He hasn't really had another chance since coming on as a late sub against Man U in the cup last season and his misplaced pass set them up for their winner (1-2). You won't see him back, NA has been gradually clearing out all AP signings - and RL is his biggest obsticle. I don't advocate managerial musical chairs, but NA must learn from the last 8 matches - Spurs are beatable - they ship goals to and we need our goal machine in attack!!! I can't see the bookies taking many bets on 0-0.

Agree with all the above except Boruc in goal I dont think he was confident and looked very nervous to me. I think Nigel will put Kelvin Davis in goal and see if the kick up the backside has worked. What we need is a performance to match Leeds away.

Firstly; Shaw was off sick with illness not injury. Secondly: Fox is the Scotland LB and Shaw is very young.. there is no rush to blood him.. listen to the pre-match press conference.. Nigel is the one who assesses every bit of information given to him from the weeks training. He studies all of that information and takes his team selections very seriously indeed.

Let the manager manage and let the fans support. COYR Together as One

Funny thought I had. The name Kent sounds quite similar to another word (you can figure it out). Ironically, the person Kent is acting like one too!

I say play him, it will be good experience for him to play in a team where their confidence is being shattered week by week, by letting in loads of goals, helping to pick the ball out the back of the net will be good for him,PUP
