Confidence still high in Saints camp - Adkins
SAINTS boss Nigel Adkins insisted that confidence remains high despite defeat at home to Spurs.
A spirited second-half was not enough to cancel out the two goals conceded during a woeful first 45 minutes at St Mary’s. Saints trailed 2-0 at half-time, with former player Gareth Bale opening the scoring, before Jay Rodriguez set up a rousing finish with his first Premier League goal midway through the second half.
Adkins said: “The reaction of the players to going behind showed great character and passion and gave ourselves a chance of winning the game “We’ve got everyone pulling in the same direction, which is important, and that gives us an opportunity to achieve what we want to achieve this season.
“We’re positive in everything we do, we keep working hard on the training ground and the lads have had a good week.
"Confidence is high and needs to remain high, it’s about sticking shoulder to shoulder with your mate and getting on with it.
“We’ve come a long way in a very short space of time and this is a first experience for a lot of people.
“Maybe we need a bit more belief, not look at the names on the back of the opposition shirt or the team sheet, and just go out and do what we do.
“We’re facing a great challenge, but when we look back we can say we worked very hard for each other during this spell and we’ll enjoy the successful period when it arrives."

People all have there own opinions and I'm not saying anyones wrong but it's his first year in this league. I don't think anyone availible other than pep guadriola would do a better job and even still it would take him time. Just remember it wasn't so long ago we were in admin minus 10 had a clueless Dutch block as manager and a bunch of kids playing. I am thankful for having a football club to support and 3 succesful years. What is one year of misery. COYRAWM!!!!
But confidence was NOT high in the first half Nigel, why?
Please stop pedalling these platitudes to us.
It's no long a first experience for the players, they've already faced last years champions and runners up.
We're not stupid.
As the reaction to going behind definitely did NOT happen until the second half.
So why we're we so bad in the first? I. Very worried about Nigel's ability to send the team out with the right attitude now.

Sorry but Mr Adkins must go we can't afford to be relegated. (Concerned.)

At the start of the campaign I would have settled for finishing fourth from bottom of the league and not only will I still settle for that, but I firmly believe that we'll actually finish higher than that after seeing the way we've played sometimes.
Before the start of the season I'm sure NA thought that his players were good enough to make an impression in this league given our last few seasons. However results to date may of altered his mind and we might see some additions in January, but I still have faith that we'll be alright and survive in this division.
Two things though:
1) I would like to see Mayuka in the starting line up after the impression he made on the team yesterday when he came on, perhaps with JP as an impact sub.
2) After reading NA's post match quote in todays Telegraph,(copied below), it appears we're now on a boat and not a bus, perhaps it might help if sea sickness pills were sold in the club shop.
“Listen, we’ve had plain sailing for the last two years,” he said. “The wind’s been at our back, it’s been calm waters, we’ve had back-to-back promotions. There’s every chance there’s going to be a period during the course of the season when the weather gets a bit choppy, the wind goes against you.
“That’s when you batten down the hatches, you stick together and you ride out the wave of the storm. When you come through that, we can enjoy the good times again.”

Second half I thought Davis took control of the middle - but I think it was because Spurs tired.
No one seems to want the ball - we pass it around the back - get into midfield, and then back again. Only JayRod seemed to want to run into channels and receive a punt because noone else created any space for themselves.
Don't get me started on Puncheon - felt he offered very little offensively (or defensively).
Disappointed that the troups at the front can't sort it out. I seem to remember JWP going to the side and speak with Adkins half way through one game at home - and instantly our shape and possession changed for the better. Is it because the senior pro's are too good to ask?
Rickie for all his running looked a shadow of himself yesterday. The 2-forwards do so much to close the defense down so they normally have to hoof it - but Spurs had players in space for the short pass. All that effort wasted.
I'm not one for formation analysis but at times yesterday we looked like we were playing 4-2-4, never mind 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.
We were raped at times in the first half - we looked like the preverbial frightened rabbits in the headlights.
"We score when we like" sang the Spurs fans...and to be honest 5-0 at HT would not have been an exaggeration of their dominance but for poor finishing.
Thankfully we go to Leeds tomorrow - not sure if it will be a confidence booster - but a nice respite for some of the squad.

The fact is he, the coaching staff, the players have no PL experience at all.
He may have led us to the promised land but is he good enough to keep us here?
The sooner he admits that he needs some help and Saints bring in an experienced coach to help him the sooner things will improve, do nothing and nothing will change.
After watching WBA yesterday,I confidently predict Saints are on to a hiding at the Hawthorns conceding at least three goals.
I'm afraid ostrich and sand spring to mind when listening to NA these days it's all getting repetitive and a bit irksome.
