Adkins wants Saints stay
10:37pm Tuesday 30th October 2012 in Sport
Nigel Adkins says he doesn’t want to leave Saints but admitted “you can’t keep losing games of football.”
Saints fans have rallied round the under-fire boss, who has seen his team endure a tough start to the Premier League season after he led them to back-to-back promotions.
Last week 78 per cent of fans in a dailyecho.co.uk poll backed him to continue as boss but the pressure has now intensified again after a 2-1 defeat to Spurs and then a dismal 3-0 Capital One Cup defeat at the hands of Leeds.
Though Adkins made a full 11 changes for the trip to Elland Road, there were plenty of senior players in a team that just didn’t perform, which will inevitably lead to further questions over his future.
“I don’t want to be going anywhere,” he insisted.
“I love the club. I love Southampton Football Club.
“I want nothing more than for us to be successful together and I keep saying that but ultimately questions will get asked and I will front it all up as I always have done.
“There needs to be stability but you can’t keep losing games of football.”
He added: “People are always going to go and talk.
“Our football club wants to be successful and stability is always important at any football club.
“We want to be successful and have just had two back-to-back promotions but we have to keep kicking on and driving on.
“The chairman will make the decisions that are right for the football club and our relationship needs to be good and we have to work hard for what we’re doing.
“I have to take full responsibility for the team that crosses the white line.
“We have to address anything and if it is going wrong then we’ve got to address it any way we can for the sake of this football club because that’s what it’s about.
“The supporters have been magnificent to me, the players have gone and performed over the years but I take responsibility.
“All I want is the best for Southampton Football Club.”

Well Nige, if you genuinely want whats best for Southampton football club then its time to pack your bags and get back on the bus. Thanks for all the work you have done over the last two to three years but I'm afraid our team isn't good enough at this level and that is down to you. You had the opportunity to improve things in the summer (£33 million spent on transfers) and look where we are. I was at the game on Sunday and it was utterly unvbelievable how poor we were in the first half compared to the second half and you just dont seem to have the ability to turn things around and get any kind of consistancy in the team. All the best for the future now please NC get Hoddle in before its too late.
Fans are the first to claim lack of loyalty from players and managers (Hoddle leaving for Spurs for example), yet not even a quarter of the way into the season you want our double-promotion-win
ning manager to be sacked.
And as for Hoddle back at St Mary's, no thanks.

I agree we were terrible first half, but after a half time teamtalk, we started playing football again. We looked like the team we were last season. We spent £33 mil on transfers, yes, but how nearly half of that is out injured. I'm not making excuses, but 2 years ago today we were 21st in League 1. I know we can't live on past glories, but it should give us a bit of breathing room. In my opinion, if anything, we should give Nigel a 5 year contract tomorrow, that way, the uncertainty of how long he has left goes, and we can concentrate on playing football without the cloud of uncertainty. And if we go down, which I remain confident we won't, Nigel is the man to get us back, more prepared than before. But think of all those years fighting for survival in the 90s. Did we sack our managers then? We gave them more time. I think we're in a stronger postion now then we were then. I think the reason for the poor start was the difference of quality between Championship and Premier League. Now we're beginning to adjust imo- Fonte has looked stronger, Yoshida's beginning to adapt, Jay's scored Sunday- its beginning to fall into place.

no time for sentiment , time to go nige its becoming embarrassing not up to the prem an got found lacking in the championship a few times . thanks for everything but time to go , gives us almost a week to get sorted as Monday at wba will be no easy game .
Come on! We didn't fall out of the top 2 positions all season! Okay so we didn't win every game, but I think some people are getting way above their stations and thinking we're better than we are. And you think its becoming embarrassing? Really? Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton... its not been the easiest of starts! Wigan and Fulham are the only games we could be doing better at.

under Nigel stability has been brought in the chairman gave Nigel the job and clearly saw something in him and surely still had his 5 year plan in mind.
Yes tonight was a very damaging result team selection can also be questioned but surely the players must be accountable for there actions so far this season the main problem is they are on premiership wages but most won't make it into another premiership team.
I still back Nigel as I'm sure many will we don't need a new manager also mr cortese needs to publicly back Nigel to stop all this media rubbish being printed damaging for Nigel.

I'd love for us to stick with Nigel and show some loyalty, and I love his commitment to the club. I can't see us stopping conceding though - given our Championship standard defence. That said, no other manager will fix it either until the transfer window.
Let's hope for a win or two in the next few games. Keep the faith!

OK, we've been pretty shocking for SOME of this season, but we have also played well against top teams.
As others have said on here and other posts, we're ahead of schedule re our 5 year plan. Perhaps last season was TOO good and we should have NOT got automatic promotion having spent the ENTIRE season in the top two. Perhaps some of you fans would be happier if last season was a mediocre middle-of-the-table season, and this season we were still in the Championship? Would that make you happy????
And as for sacking Adkins!! Who would you get in who would be BETTER???? And please God do not say Redknapp or Hoddle!!!!! Surely the managers who are out of work, are out of work because they're sh!t.
Except maybe Pep Guardiola, and of course, he's sure to come to SMS isn't he!!!!!!
Now get off Adkins' back and support your team! And while you're all at it, STOP BOOING AND CRITICISING GULY AND FOX!!!!!!

Nige has proved the team are still playing for him - hence 2nd half against the y!ds, think how many more chances we will create with Gaston in the line up , i just dont see a change in manager rectifying our situation.
Also as for the Boruc situation- Chapel, if you actually got behind the team for once, instead of slagging off our keeper making his home debut- then maybe you would be appreciated more like Northam/Kingsland corner/Itchen corner are!! Boruc is a very passionate player and wears his heart on his sleeve, a friend who is a Celtic fan cant speak highly enough of him- lets give him a break eh..... COYR

I couldn't care less about the Leeds game except that it gave others in the squad a chance to have a run-out.

For goodness sake a he put out a team that hadn't had first team games to see if they could step up to the mark. They didn't and he takes responsibility for their poor showing a few players will now probably be on the for sale list for the window at Xmas and they know it.
When I saw the team sheet I thought it was an attacking team and really thought we'd win... we didn't get over it. If Nigel put out the Firsts, lost got a couple more injuries everyone would be even more furious.. I find it two faced and totally embarrassing.

Nigel Adkins hasn't suddenly become a bad manager. Sure the defence is poor and needs improving - that can't happen till January. Sure the club failed to sign enough quality defenders in the summer. We all know the manager identified some but they didn't come. Why we'll never be told probably but we can assume the Chairman has a big responsibility for why not as much as if not more than the manager.
We saw enough in the second half on Sunday to suggest our Manager is capable of producing the goods. He just needs to find the right blend. And the defenders need to stop making basic errors though they need a change of luck as well.
So let's stop all this panicky nonsense please, support the team, support the manager, support the Chairman, support ourselves. My recollection of the last three years is the combination of all four have brought us a lot of joy, a lot of fun, a lot of success.

It's very a rare any manager in this league has a fully fit team to pick from. Injuries are inevitable. Ramirez will be back soon and then we might lose Lallana or Lambert or both through injury.
A good manager will find a way to grind out results no matter what.
You can't use injuries as an excuse.
IMO Adkins is out of ideas. We need a fresh approach.

Lets have a bit of perspective here.
calm.
The objective this season is merely survival. Anything more is a bonus.
calm.
All we need to be is less terrible than three other teams in the Premier League.
calm. close your eyes, breath in
As far as I'm concerned we can play horribly for the whole season as long as when the final whistle blows we are in the slot above the relegation zone
calm. breath out slowly
In fact I suggest you all type that out and tape it to the top of your monitor - All we need to do is be less terrible than three other teams in the Premier League.
calm.
this objective is entirely achievable. the transfer window is coming and I think we can all agree that the scouts are out looking for some defenders. thats good.

This result changes nothing. The league remains the priority and on that I'll judge Nigel once he's got a fit first team to pick from.

I think Shaw should start now he's fit, he can't really be much worse than Fox can he?
Also can somebody explain to me if Cortese is making Adkins play Guly or if Adkins just has a massive blindspot there because from your attackers you don't want great pass completion rate particularly you want assists and goals!
If we have a bad November i'd like to see Strachen or a big name manager not someone like Mcleish or Coyle because that would be pointless

The only reason we didn't go up under Pardew was we fell short due to the 10 point deduction. We had the best (ish) squad in the league with the most money spent when we got out of League One and the Championship so basically, whoever was in charge should have got us promoted. Now we're in a superior league we need a manager who doesn't rely on just positivity and friendly charm and nice bloke stuff, we need a tactician and manager with experience at the highest level which Adkins doesn't have. Adkins has basically got a job promotion by taking us here and he's not quite cut out for it. Imagine you're not a Saints fan, would you keep him? No, it makes no sense. We need to change things before we're stuck in a massive hole. His tactics fall short, substitutions don't work and after Spurs' second goal on Sunday the confidence was totally gone. You could see it in the body language of the players. I like Adkins, I wish him all the best but following Saints costs me thousands of pounds a year and I'm not putting up with this shower of sh!te any longer. Our next 5 games are totally winnable. If we don't pick up at least 9 points we need a new manager. Last chance to prove me wrong NA.

Did anyone seriously think that a team that's never played together competitively, that was made up of mainly second and sometimes third choice players plus some promising but not yet ready youngsters would beat a seasoned set of pros pushing for promotion like Leeds? Get real people. We're in trouble in the Premiership, we're trying to get our top players fit, we didn't need the distraction of a long journey 48 hours after a tough league game to play in a tin-pot competition. We put out a side, we met our obligation, we lost, we get back to what's important - staying up! Was this the first team ? No. Is it a disaster therefore ? Of course it isn't. If it was third first team it would be worrying but it wasn't so it means nothing.
My recollection of the last three years is the combination of all four have brought us a lot of joy, a lot of fun, a lot of success.

bakeyboy wrote:Well surely the second half was proof that the players are still playing for Adkins?
End of last season a few months ago people were talking statues and greatness. After listening to the texts and tweets on Solent Radio and reading some of the posts here and elsewhere on the net I have to say I am heartily glad my family moved out to NZ in the 70s. For the first time in my life I'm ashamed of some of the so called Sotonians putting ruthless knives going into this man of honour.

The trouble with Nigel is he is too nice a guy and always takes the responsibility for his decisions. The Echo then uses it to repeat the same old story they have written so many times in the past 2-3 weeks....very poor journalism or sensationalism in my humble opinion.
I for one think NA did the right thing last night and his reasons for resting his top 11 were totally valid. Yes the team he picked all had the opportunity to prove themselves. Unfortunately it did not work which proved the current first eleven are the best choices on current form.
In Nigel"s favour he changed the team around against Wednesday in the previous round and at that time we won and it showed the depth the squad has.
Confidence is what the Manager and team needs not repetitive sensationalism from the Echo. writing the same story so many times.
Please Mr Editor reinstall the confidence in Mr Adkins ability to manage the Club and take us forward from here.
The Club had back to back promotions and are 2 years ahead in their game plan. Articles such as the Echo are writing are self destructive to the Club and are an insult to Nigel.

so you all expected Lee to come back onto the pitch and perform miracles?
when did he last play?
Last night was the perfect opportunity to give him some game time - which is what he needs after being out for so long with injuries.
it was a league cup match - of no importance to the over all goal of staying up.
WE ONLY NEED TO FINISH OUTSIDE THE RELEGATION ZONE.
we've had a really tough start to the season playing pretty much all of the top side straightaway. We are now getting into matches that we have a good chance of winning.
Get on those terraces, give the team your full support and stop bemoaning losses that aren't important to us.

No one really got stuck in - everytime they did the referee blew for a foul. The slightest contact ended up with a Leeds player on his backside - foul!
It was a run out for Lee - nothing more. No lightning runs, no balls out wide, nothing. He covered a lot of ground to no avail as no one passed it to him!
Disappointed with Mayuka - but again playing out of position and asked to be the lone striker/target man. Not his fault he never got the ball - or is it?
The frustrating thing for me was all the good possession across the back was constantly being undone by a sloppy pass to someone in midfield with 3-players closing in on him! It's almost as if the understand about keeping the ball - do it for a couple of minutes and then give it someone else to do something with because they don't want to pass it sideways again!
It's over, no good trying to rectify last nights result (a bit like the penalty given on 90+3) we can't change anything.
Move on - see what happens at WBA on Monday night...and have a good moan then whatever the result!
Are we supporters or moaners?
Perhaps we shouldn't underestimate Leeds last night - with 4-ex Pompey players "up for it" made them more combatative?

Lee to cause the opposition a lot of trouble when he gets back into action.well he was back last night and looked anything but a qualty international player.i fear that when Ramirez does get back he will find the cold, windy wet English winter waether difficult to adapt to at first.Come next spring he should work his magic.i can remember some great South American players coming to england over the years and being as miserable on the pitch as our winter weather.lets hope Ramirez is an exception to this and can find his best form straight away when he does eventually return.
He wasn't at the races last night because no one in the team recognised they need to release the ball early in behind the defence!

Just what is there for you to crow about? That we've lost a few games?
Its still early days me old Skunt, we'll turn it around. But if not and we are relegated, so what? We will have the parachute payments and bounce straight back, I don't suppose you'll know what a parachute payment is do you seeing it went straight to the administrator! Ouch!
Which brings me nicely to your little club, AFC Dynarod! Now where and what league are you in right now? And of course, there is the confirmed prospect of at least another -10 or perhaps even more points deduction. Now that's gotta sting!
Need I go on me old Plastic Cockney? Methinks you and the rest of the "pond life" have far more to fear than we do! Liquidation anyone?

Im not sure if Nigel should go now,its reached rock bottom tonight and what can get worse, perhaps the 78% of happy clappers are right after all, things can only get better now.

I believe he cant cut it and have been one of the 78% for a while but he has done so well over the last couple of years i almost feel guilty wanting him to walk away.
But not about being fed up with results
A dilema for us all

I notice Man City, Everton and Newcastle all failed to get as far as us. Quite rightly Nigel Adkins chose to rest his best players and give a game to the second stringers and some youngsters. Good management on my view. Or would you rather he'd risked injuries against another robust Warnock side in a competition that United or Chelsea or Arsenal are going to win anyway. I know which I'd prefer and that's staying up!
Shareholder wrote:a good manager on top of his game would put out a winning x1.Did the players let the manager who picked them down.YES THEY SURE DID.did the manager let the travelling fans down by picking an inexperienced bench.Yes he did but let us hope he gets the selection right on Monday v WBA
This is all sensationalist twaddle. Did anybody seriously think that team was going to win last night?

NA and Saints needed a run in the League Cup like a hole in the head, I'm glad we are out of it, at least players won't get injured and we can now concentrate on staying in the PL with as strong a squad as possible.
If results continue the way they have gone up until now, then by January it will be too late to turn things around no matter how many new players are signed.
If nothing changes then neither will the results.
The easiest way to make something happen and change for the good would be to bring in an experienced PL coach like Hoddle to help NA find his feet in the PL, this needn't be seen as a threat to NA but as assistance.
I do not want NA to be sacked but as long as we keep losing and NC sits on his hands and says and does nothing then I think it will be inevitable.
Perhaps a more knowledgeable poster can advise me, if Saints are relegated what lump sum parachute payment would Saints receive?
If it is substantial, I wouldn't mind betting that NC might just bank it, take his bonus and sever his connections with the club, maybe that's why NC has stayed so quiet for so long allowing poor old Nigel to take the flak.
Can't see Saints coming away from the Hawthorns with anything better than a defeat by at least 2 clear goals, plenty of time then for Nigel to compose his lament.
Our only hope is to bring in a coach NOW who knows something about playing in the Premier League clearly NA, NC, the coaching staff and the players don't have a clue.

His last management position in England was Wolves and he got the sack as the lowest goalscoring team in several seasons and demonstrations by Wolves fans to get rid of him.
He was sacked by Spurs and he didn't get us any higher up the table than several previous Saints managers.
Cortese to take a bonus and clear off?
Don't you think he could have paid himself a massive bonus already ?
Some of your thinking is quite bizarre.

Why do some fans talk out of their backsides and say Adkins must go??

Nigel Adkins needs help, from the players, the fans and the board.
If Na was too manage Man United in there next game, the team would pick itself and the players would know whats expected, you could probably sit in the dug out and read a book the whole 90 mins and get a win.
The point is were new boys here, forget the past ,we probably have 5 players that are up to this level,
which is half the problem, you can shuffle the chairs on the titanic type of thing.
The problem now is the time we have to wait to january,is Na still gonna be here, what funds we have and the quality we buy,i dont wont Na to go or be sacked but i feel we need something right now and january is too far to wait.
