West Brom midfielder Chris Brunt is hoping to revive memories of one of the happiest days of his career as he aims to return to fitness in time for the visit of Saints on Monday.

Brunt, who played an hour for the under-21s in midweek in his recovery from a hamstring strain, scored the goal that earned the Baggies promotion to the Premier League against Saints in 2008.

The game at the Hawthorns was also a memorable one for Adam Lallana, who came off the bench to score his first senior goal on 77 minutes for Nigel Pearson’s team.

Brunt’s equaliser seven minutes later meant the game finished 1-1 but the result helped Saints towards Championship survival and guaranteed Premier League football for West Brom.

Brunt said: “Fingers crossed nothing goes wrong this week and hopefully I’ll be fit enough to face Southampton.

“I’ll have to get another few days training to be involved in some shape or form. It’s down to the gaffer and what he thinks from this week’s training.

“But it would be nice to get involved again.”

Brunt is not the only returning player for West Brom. The Baggies could well be at full strength with Billy Jones, Jerome Thomas and Boaz Myhill also making comebacks from injury to play as over aged players for the under-21s.
