Brockenhurst College student Josh Young has been crowned Southampton Junior Open champion.

The 16-year-old New Forest Golf Club member, who plays off four, claimed the title at the Southampton City golf course with a comfortable six-shot margin, producing a five-over-par 74 on the demanding parkland course.

Josh, who lives at Ashurst, is in his first year of a golf scholarship at Brockenhurst College in conjunction with nearby Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club.

He said: “There were around 40 players so it was great to come first. It’s not really a birdie making course but I was pleased.”

Proud New Forest GC pro Chris Tyrrell said: “As well as winning this junior open, Josh has also won the New Forest Golf Club Junior Club Championship recently.

“He is a regular for the men’s first team where he played on his own against two men and birdied the last hole to win his match and a point for the team.

“Everyone here is very proud of Josh and what he has achieved and is sure he will use this as a springboard to go from strength to strength in the future.”
