Puncheon: We're better than our league position
8:31am Monday 19th November 2012 in Sport
Jason Puncheon
The player who has gone from outcast to potential saviour in less than a year believes Saints’ position in the league this season bears no resemblance to the squad’s talent.
Former QPR loanee Jason Puncheon produced a virtuoso performance on his return to Loftus Road, inspiring Saints to a crucial 3-1 victory that could have kept Nigel Adkins in a job.
A first away win of the season was not enough to move Saints up from 19th place, but Puncheon insists the side are now showing that they are far better than their position suggests.
“As a group we've always known that we shouldn’t be where we are,” he said.

It is a long time ago, but wasn't Puncheon ostracised for bullying Oxo? He may have been partly responsible for him deciding to leave in the end. Whatever the problem was,it was dealt with sensibly within the Club, peace was declared and all is well again. The only criticism of JP on Saturday was having got his goal, he then became a bit greedy looking for more!

I was a little concerned at the small errors Gazza made though. Gazza is learning and impriving but QPR were poor and against better opposition we would have been punished more severely. Their goal was a bad mistake though and Gazza was in no mans land. something that should be sorted out in training.
We are most definitely better than our league position shows, so now we have tp prove that statement against a stronger team. Newcastle are a good test. I think we can beat them and keep our first clean sheet. Now THAT would re-establish us as a force to be reckoned with and boost team confidence.
The shape of the team on Saturday looked strong, we need to cut down the miss passes, but generally that looked like a very strong unit that will be above the bottom six by the end of the season.
Reason to be cheerful ..............

We all knew that JP had the potential to be a class player but his application didn't match his talent (for whatever reason).
We're all glad he has made a fresh start, hopefully he'll remind the manager who signed him just how good he is this weekend!

He plays well when he wants to but as Nigel would say "Hard work beats Talent when Talent doesnt work hard"
For me he is still a bit predictatble but he showed up a QPR side low on comitment. His best performance though, I hope that this is a springboard for a glittering Saints career but im not holding my breath.
The best I think we can hope for is an effort to put himself in the shop window that will help keep us up.

Gaston is a luxury ( and a very good one ), but should be used accordingly. When Davis came on, Saints were no worse and Davis attacked as much as Gaston did. I think Gaston is better at home and coming on when opposition legs are tired . His skills are fantastic. However often for the 1st half we need work rate and I would consider a 5th midfielder ( davis or ward prowse ), and use Gaston more tactically.
Secondly the non - communication of NC with the media is so correct in my view. You can see how the media struggle to get stories from the Saints. They then make them up. At least we know it cannot be the truth as they know so little. NC keeping quiet I am sure helps Nigel. You only have to look at how much Tony Fernandes has said in recent weeks to see the mess that has landed Mark Hughes and him in now.

Then came his wilderness period - no one knows the exact reasons for this - followed by a series of loans to other clubs, most of whom wanted to buy him (Millwall, Blackpool).
Some felt he was a bit of a traitor, some that it was in the club's best interests to ship him out, some just felt he wasn't good enough.
I first saw him play at MK Dons (THAT Rickie hatrick in the rain) and thought he had a lot more about him than, say, Antonio. It's interesting to see where the two are now.
Well done Punch for turning things around. As said above, I hope he isn't just playing for a new contract and realises he can push on and be a regular for the next 5+ years if he wants.

I do agree with your thoughts, for me Saints biggest defence problem is a weak midfield, tackle wise and potentially playing less attacking players can tighten up the game, but you can only do this once you in a winning position. Great result, good shape at last, which was the same against Swansea, where we should of won, which was thrown away due to poor goalkeeping, again. Good to see Lambert playing without Rod, these two cannot play together, which I have been saying for the last two months. Lambert is playing as a target man and not in a support role. Lets not get carried away, we still need 12 wins in total and 4 more wins before the halfway point. The last two games have seen a change and finally learning. Luke, Corky, and Gaston. We have to sort the goalkeeping out, all options look poor right now. And while I am on the rant, too many "experts" say QPR players are not good enough, poor signings etc. QPR have no team spirit which was there where Warnock was the manager. Atkins has tried hard to keep a team spirit ,even when we have bought in new players and performances have been poor. In many cases Atkins decisions have not been good. Maybe we are turning the corner, I suddenly feel more optimistic about our chances.
Two things from the QPR game for me.

Jason Puncheon had a good game, I dont think it is much coincidence that he tries harder against his old clubs (most players do) and is getting is head down now he is part of a premiership team, and he has real competition for his place - maybe previously he felt he was better than League 1 and wasnt being pushed enough. Not saying he was lazy, but complacent probably - which I am thinking the management spotted.
As for Gazza, he did look a little shaky but it was to be expected after his error last week, he was playing in front of the away fans and may have been wondering what reception he might get - especially given the Boruc incident. You saw how Gazza celebrated with the fans after we scored, so he maybe started to relax then. The goal was a mistake, but he isnt the first keeper to be caught out there, and others made mistakes before his - it was a cheap cross, and the lad was unmarked!
For me Gaston looked very lightweight, and didnt effect the game as much as I would have expected. Maybe he had a tough week flying away for international duty, but he wasnt at the races. However, with 4 out of the next 5 at home, he will be very influential in our quest for more points coming up.
As for Shaw, I couldnt believe some of the fans whinging that he was being taken off after 75 minutes - the lad is just 17!! He is not physically fit or strong enough for 90 minutes in the top league yet. He didnt put a foot wrong and doesnt need his confidence shot to pieces by being allowed to have slack 15 minutes, potentially costing us points, due to being forced to play when he isnt fit enough yet.
I think NA has truly learnt from his substitutions mistakes of the past. No taking Lambert off these days, his physical presence is too important for the "out ball", and no hauling off Lallana or Puncheon for an "impact" player that has yet to make that sort of impact. Points are key, the team is playing well so the subs are only made where necessary.
Gaston was lightweight, so he brought on Davies for energy and to keep us from being over-run in midfield. Shaw was tiring, so Fox is a natural choice.
And my final word if for Cork, again we look a totally different team when he is playing. An unsung hero in my eyes, he brings solidity in positioning and breaks up play nicely. Keep him fit and we will be alright!

If Nigel sticks with Gazza, great, just concerned that any mistakes from crosses and deadballs vs Ba and co could be costly. I'd prefer to see him blooded in a less pressurised situation.
Shaw is a totally different case - yes he's young, but you can get away with it at left or right back. A keeper is much more fragile.
I think Nigel did brilliant with him - protected him during our nightmare run of fixtures, blooded him towards the end of a game we'd already effectively lost and gave him two winnable games to establish himself.
Fantastic show of unity on and off the pitch on Saturday - Saints fans deserve to feel proud for the way they've not just stuck by Nigel but actively supported him.
I think a couple of years out of the top flight have helped us get our soul back and, win lose or draw, I'm a much prouder Saints fan for it.

Two things from the QPR game for me.
His first game for us was Arsenal, but we then won with him against Villa. He scored away for us at the Toffees, before being injured.
He then came back unfit at the Baggies, but then involved against the Swans and the win at QPR...
By my reconning with him we have played 6, Won 2, Drawn 1, Lost 3. = 7 points...
I don't really think that it's a coincidence that he's been involved in helping us gain most of our points.

To be honest I'm a little surprised by him - from reading the comments attributed to him before he signed I was expecting him to be quite cocky and gobby but he seems almost a little timid. He's going to take a little while to get used to the Premiership but his class will shine out before too long. Hopefully as his English improves he'll get more confident within the team and Nigel will be able to work his magic on him to make him feel 10 feet tall - it's probably hard to do that with a player who can't understand what you're saying.

Apparently because of the whole Hitler 'business' there was a trade embargo on Germany so Coca Cola Germany couldn't get the ingredients to make Coke. Consequently, they came up with a new drink using the stuff they could find, and called it Fanta because it was short for the German word Fantasie. Admittedly, the Second World War was quite a high price to pay for it, but by god it's lovely.

On one hand you have plonkers like Fatfella777 and the fish fiddlers who post nothing but WUM drivel on here. Then you have the rest who add insight and value wherever the discussion may head.
We should be flattered that there's more action on here from Bompey and fishies than on their own sites. The reason? Education, activity and a secret love for the mighty Saints!
'Little Hitler' is a commonly used term these days, and not just for the obvious links to dictator type people.

OK thats enough of that.
I have to say that some of the posts on here are decidedly odd. I have been quiet of late, as I got caught up in arguments a couple of times where I should have known better. Happens to the best of us.
But today ? ... There are some strange people out there. Some are obsessed with club debts, I really couldn't give a fig really. I dont care if they are in the know. I have enough contacts of my own to know what is going on but feel no need to spout about it on here. We have a business man in charge and he knows what he's doing.
I'm a red blood Saints fan through and through... I want to see the team playing, I want to see great play, great players, great games and all the fun that comes with that part of football. Some of the puffs on here today are from self obsessed nerds who just need to get out more.

....some football we play is sublime no question but end product is lacking far too often, Lallana often reminds me of the early Giggs who had talent in spades but whose final ball or positioning after beating someone lead nowhere...beating the man is not enough, what are you going to do next...
...with luck he will sort this out, happy days then...general overplaying and trying to walk the ball in the net has to be dealt with by other too.
We will not go down, I have said that from the off, the suprise to other teams in the premiership will come when it all clicks into place because we are a much better side than many teams....
.. schoolboy or sunday league errors still a hangover from division 1 are costing us dear..when these errors are all addressed and they will be, we will all be supporting a top 7 side.
When the results and beautiful football combine....well I will leave that to your imagination..

In the past we have had 3 goalies at least from Spurs. The England B keeper RON REYNOLDS who was a great servant for the club back in the 60's.I can remember he got injured at fratton park against the dreadful poirpoisemouth. He never played again. Then we got JOHN HOLLOWBREAD from Tottenham. He was the great BILL BROWNS understudy during the glory glory hallelujah days at White Hart Lane when they were the 1st club in the 20th century to win the double. Then of course we got Tommy Forecast as make weight in the Gareth Bale deal.WHAT WAS IT MEATLOAF SAID-2 OUT OF 3 AI'NT BAD.

Yoshida and Rodriguez have been having a tough time in the League, but Rodriguez has done well when on the smaller stage. If he finds some confidence he will do well.
Steven Davis and Nat Clyne have been brilliant, they are both great captures and will do very well for the club in their time here.

It's funny isn't, a player who couldnt even get a game in league 1, who was loaned out is man of the match in a prem league clash. I can remember saying on here that he was a class player and he should stay after his twitter remarks and all you naysayers saying no get rid of him,he is a traitor, he doesn't care about Saints. It just shows what most of you really know about football on this site, not a lot.
consistancy has always been Puncheons problem- i think you might be blowing smoke up your own a little premiture here.

I say we play Kelvin, and he tutors Gazza to become a better player. Kelvin is still a great keeper (and penalty saver from our earlier games) and has a lot to offer the club.
Once Gazza has stopped his mistakes he will be a fine keeper. Until then play Kelvin (not Boruc) and play a five man holding midfield with one or two supporting the defence but allowing the other three to move forward to help the lone striker.
If not Kelvin then loan a decent keeper who is not getting games (eg Brad Freidel).

The confidence that had been ebbing away was back against Swansea and QPR. I can see us putting a decent run together for the rest of 2012 now.
Team has a settled look to it; all Gazza needs is a clean sheet. Cabaye being out for weeks helps.

Jason Puncheon was bought by Alan Pardew and was told he should be playing in the Prem and if he stayed with Saints he would.
He got impatient because he believed what Pardew told him.
All he ever wanted was to play in the Prem and he didn't really care who for.
His turnaround in form for us began when Cortese told him to behave and he apologised. Mostly because there was a very good chance we were going to get promoted and the promised land was within sight.
When Pardew signed him he told all of us that Punch was a special talent and that he would be one hell of a player, he was right.
All Saints have to do to keep him is stay in the Prem.
Just hope that no one tells him he is England class and to obtain that he needs to sign for a "big" club, he is likely to believe that.
Saturday he worked really hard to prove a point to QPR, next week he needs to work hard again to prove a point to Pardew.
As long as there points to prove he will be outstanding, so all we as supporters have to do is tell him how brilliant he is and want him to stay.
Doomngloomerchants will now start to run him down!!!!!!!!!!

More skates on here than on the News site!! !
And so bad mannered and bad tempered.
Difficult to see that Pompey in Spain is remotely connected to such foul mouthed and illiterate yobs.
They do not exactly portray Portsmouth in a very good light, do they?

to come on hear and try to say we are spending money we havent got, well that comming from your lot is a bit rich (sorry i know i should not say rich in respect to your club), we have owners who have got money, but we dont want to spend it! we havent got a manager who is always going to the owner begging for more money for more player on wages the club cant afford!
so on the same day that we sign an exciting youngster who is from your dump but didnt want to play for your lot, like some others, on a 5 year deal you sign a nobody on a 1 month deal! spending money that should be going to the creditors of your club, you know the local businesses and charities who still havent been payed from 3 years ago! you are an embarrassment to the football world and the sooner you are kicked out of the league the better, the problem is you lot dont see it and have no shame, westknob is a prime example of that!

dadofmy3sons wrote:NC did not "tell him to appologise". Thats made up. NC/NA realised that Punch was a golden nugget that we would soon loose if the situation was not sorted. It was a mutual discussion from what I heard and appologies were accepted all round. If he had left, given our summer signings, it would have been a disaster. Neutral pundits would have had a field day. It was a no brainer to keep him on board. It was his personal terms that kept him from signing for other clubs and I happen to agree with him that he should have stuck to his guns and not be let go a get paid "reject" wages. His performances for Blackpool in the Prem were mostly excellant. Its pretty obvious now the talent the guy has, not only his basic football brain but a lot more.
My personal opinion........
Support the Saints...I do.
