Teenage starlet Shaw a Saints torchbearer
Luke Shaw is leading the way for Saints as the club boast the youngest team in the Premier League.
At just 17-years-old, Shaw is the youngest player in the top flight, slotting into the youngest side.
The last round of fixtures saw Saints field a team with an average age of less than 24 – younger than any other side in the division and about seven years younger than Fulham.
Shaw is the torch bearer for this, as one of only two 17-year-olds who started in the latest round of Premier League games.
But while Liverpool’s England international Raheem Sterling turns 18 next month, Shaw doesn’t reach that particular milestone until next July.
Possibly surprisingly, Shaw was one of only SIX teenagers who started their club’s most recent Premier League game out of 210 players.
Of those, Liverpool fielded half of them – 19-year-olds Suso and Andre Wisdom also starting alongside Sterling against Wigan at Anfield.
Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic and Swansea full back Ben Davies are also 19.
Two more 19-year-olds came on as a sub – ex-Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Arsenal and Newcastle’s Gail Bigrimana.
It all goes to underline Saints’ commitment to youth, redoubled this week with a new five-year contract for 18-year-old James Ward-Prowse.
“There is a vision at the football club to bring our youngsters through the system,” reflected Saints boss Nigel Adkins.
“James Ward-Prowse has been playing and been there on merit and done ever so well and Luke Shaw we have high hopes for.
“He came off against Swansea with cramp and came off again (at QPR) with cramp.
“He’s a young 17-year-old and it’s probably highlighted more because he’s a defender that he’s had to come off, but we did it with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when he was here and he was coming off with cramp towards the end of game.
“It is a bit easier when it’s a forward player and a bit more challenging when it’s a defender, but I’ve got to have the confidence to go and do that.
“We believe he’s played ever so well again and we’ve got a lot of confidence in him.
“How is he going to gain experience? He’s only going to gain it by playing.
“I’ve got to have the confidence and the belief and the resolve to say ‘if you’re ready, I’m going to play you.’”
Saints are committed to try to get young players through their system and into the first team.
That remains a tough challenge when you consider that, despite such a young side, Saints only had two academy developed products in their starting line-up for the win over QPR – Shaw and captain Adam Lallana.
Adkins is the man who has to make the big calls on whether to include the youngsters or not, and is taking his responsibility very seriously.
“We are very mindful of not putting any of the youngsters in a situation that could have an adverse effect on them,” he said.
“We take a lot of care and attention about the youngsters that we have at the football club because we have a growing responsibility for their development.
“We want to give them that opportunity to develop and nurture them.
“I’ve done it in the past and there are times when we will put them in and take them out and give them that opportunity to gain them experience and keep progressing.
“That’s going to continue.”

You don't have to like him but this is Cortese's vision and I for one want to give it the time it deserves.
Roll on Sunday, seems a long way off still - can't wait after how well we played at Loftus Road.

It will be interesting in January .. we still need to strengthen .. but then again we may be looking to sell some too. There's the book keeping to be kept balanced as well as the team balance and we know that Cortese is a consummate business man. Remember we have already effectively off loaded Hammond and Sharp.
Anyway, a good story to start a Wednesday, upbeat and optimistic.
See ! It can be done.

We have such a good young team that if we can keep them together over the next 4-5 years we'll have a very good Premiership team I reckon. In goal, Gazza is young, in defence we have Shaw, Clyne and Yoshida, plus Stephens coming through. In midfield we have Lallana, Cork, Schneiderlin, Ramirez, Ward-Prowse, Reeves, with Chambers coming through. Then upfront we have the young Rodriguez plus the likes of Sinclair and Seager, who's in awesome form for the U18's, coming through. All looking good for the future.

I think we have a great young squad, and one that seems to be playing better and better each game. Granted those games are now against lesser opposition, but we all knew as Saints fans that the start had been tough and the league position wasn't reflective of where we should be. You can only judge at Christmas when everyone has played each other once and the league begins to take shape.
I would welcome Brad Friedel as a great signing for a couple of years, helping to bring Gazza through. Keep KD as good back-up and a great example of how to be part of the team/club appropriately. Offload Boruc.
I do think we also need another strong and fast centre-half. Hats off to Fonte, he has come on leaps and bounds the last month or so, and Yoshida has started to settle and take some of the ball playing strain from Fonte - letting him concentrate on winning headers and tackles.
My worry is that one of them will be suspended at some point and we need more strength in depth. Michael Dawson would be a good signing for us I think.
Apart from that we have good depth all over the pitch, things look good for the future.

He's like a little baby that just wants success and thinks chucking money around should guarantee him that.

The jury on Nigel Adkins is still out. I really hope he can turn things around, but I'm skeptical. We are capable of playing some lovely football, but, as others have said, we do hold onto the ball for way to long. Also I think we should have concentrated on putting together a good defense in the summer. But Nathaniel Clyne was a great buy, there's more to come from him!
I live in Greece, poor old Nigel wouldn't have lasted five games here! A few seasons ago Olympiakos went through something like four managers in a year. One of which was the Brazilian legend, ZIco. The fans here turn on the manger & players during a match, nothing like Southampton!

Shaw is a great player but inexperienced, this Premier League game time is fantastic for him because it will mould him into a better player quite quickly due to his experience.

I think all we need to supplement the youthful squad we've got is an on loan established keeper (Friedel fits the bill and AVB may have to plump for his expensive French keeper and name him #1 now) and a big ugly premier league centre back, also on loan probably. There must be options other than Dawson slightly down the pecking order who'd fancy a loan switch; I've got my doubts about Dawson.

Abramovich is 'up to the job' all the time that HE is in charge and it's HIS money to spend.

Abramovich has gone through nine managers in nine years. That's an appalling failure rate. The only common denominator is Abramovich himself. At what stage do you say that Abramovich is patently not up to the job?
The problem at Chelsea (and elsewhere) is that the guy who has the money is the same one who takes the day-to-day decisions.
Abramovich is 'up to the job' all the time that HE is in charge and it's HIS money to spend.
At Saints, should the Leibherrs ever decide that NC isn't 'up to the job', they can boot him out or pull the plug.
It's the arrogance and complacency that bothers me. Can you imagine Saints sacking NA a few months after winning the Champions League Title? Jeez.

what i am even more pleased about is the fact that our academy is producing player after player who have the ability to play well in the prem. this can only be a good thing for us, bringing through youngsters is the way forward. the academy will be funded by the players, who are not up to our standard, being sold on to other teams. the academy is the answer to our long term future success and i can not wait. i bet other clubs fans now wished that they had put some money into their academy instead of just buying overpriced overpaid players.

Champions league winners 2543, that's my bet!
It's time for all us true Saints fans to emulate our greatest ever great hampshire ever greatest club down the road.
So ... if 20000 cannot turn up on Sunday that would be a good start! For those that do... we must make sure we boo the team all through the game to show our support and leave after 70 mins!
After Sunday we must all make pledges to SFC, don't worry, it's only a pledge, no money involved!

I don't have a problem if wealthy individuals want to pump money into the sport, that can be rewarding for a club and it's fans... But, in Abramovich's case it seems to be success at any cost, which sets precedents and can only damage his club and football in general

I was wondering about this very question on Saturday; whether we were the youngest team out there. Odd for the Daily Echo to post something so positive - keep it up.
What a triumph of forward vision and belief in the future.
Youngsters were gradually introduced Into A Winning Team, and that is the big difference.
Bringing in youngsters into a losing team does nothing for their confidence, in fact it can undermine it in some cases.
At present the aim must be for consolidation, and that means bringing in experienced players, with proven ability, to halt the slide back to th Championship.
When the threat of relegation has been removed, then is the time for the gradual introduction of youngsters.
That is what was done by Arsenal to both Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain and with Bale at Spurs.

A recent graduate of the saints youth team was on parade at Poirpoisemouth last night.LLOYD JAMES when Leyton Orient spanked the fratton clueless ones.To even matters out the home side also had an ex saints youth team player-their skipper Brian Howard. When he was at saints he was an England international at several levels although despite a move from us to chelsea he never really made it as a top grade player. So a salutary caution before we get too carried away with the Luke Shaw band wagon.
I go back a long way with saints and can remember TED BATES TADPOLES going to OLD TRAFFORD with our youth team at the height of the BUSBY BABES era when the man U team had won the youth cup competition several years in a row.We gave the Man u youngsters a good tonking.one of their team members was Kenny Morgans the welsh winger who a month or so along the line was a survivor of rthe dreadful Munich aircrash.Kenny sadly died a few days ago.
Our side that night featured the likes of TERRY PAINE aND john sydenham who ten years later were playing top flight football for us on a regular basis and providing the ammunition for our own great welsh striker RON DAVIES.Other members of our team that night never really made it at the very top.Although goalie TONY GODFREY did play several 1st team games for us over several years before moving on to Aldershot.Wing half Terry Simpson also played a few games but he was always behind Cliff Huxford in the pecking order.Although Terry did move on to top division football with WBA.Our centre forward that evening at old trafford was Wesley Maughan from the isle of wight who also played several times for the first team but he was up against the likes of Derek Reeves for the covetted no 9 shirt and he moved on to play for reading.
Moral of this little tale is that great youth team players do not always blossom a few seasons down the line.
Having said that i do believe that the youngsters we have at the moment are as good as any other club in england have in 2012.

'Caretaker manager Guy Whittingham rounded on his Pompey troops and insisted: The crowd were right to boo.'
Anyway, we should make hay whilst the sunshines as fortunes will shortly be reversed:
'Supporters unable to afford a £1,000 share in the trust’s share scheme can buy part of a share for £25 through the website.
Fans can also buy Power to the People T-shirts – with all proceeds going towards the trust should it take over'
How will we ever compete with this financial might?
As one of the skates said - Barcelona fans own their club, Pompey fans will own their club - you can certainly see the likeness!
If we all stick together and do this we can truly become the best bestest ever south coast best hampshire ever bestest history ever ever!

As for our academy, it will continue to produce talent that will silence many an away fan at SMS. There's plenty more on the fringe.
We have a great production line that is the basis for our future success. It'll take a few years yet, but the aim to have 50% academy players in the first eleven is acheivable.

1. Steven Drench – Guiseley
2. James Biggins – ?
3. Gary Borrowdale – QPR
4. Ross Gardner - Shildon
5. David Raven – Shrewsbury Town, trialling for Tranmere
6. Chris Hogg – Inverness Caledonian
7. Wayne Routledge – Swansea
8. Lee Croft – Derby
9. Wayne Rooney – Man U
10. Stacy Long – Stevenage
11. Mark Smyth – Bangor
12. Mat Sadler – Walsall
13. Nicky Eyre - ?
14. David Mannix – Vauxhall Motors
15. Tom Groves - ?
16. Scott Brown – York City
17. Dorryl Proffitt - ?
18. Sean Doherty – Colwyn Bay
So, no guarantees of success just by being good when you're young. However, I still like the look of both Shaw and JWP.
I just love, though, that the point of all the academy focus is to look forward to a stream of talent of our own. Focussing on the future rather than the past has to lead to progress.

As for our academy, it will continue to produce talent that will silence many an away fan at SMS. There's plenty more on the fringe.
We have a great production line that is the basis for our future success. It'll take a few years yet, but the aim to have 50% academy players in the first eleven is acheivable.

Terry Paine was exempt from national sevice would you believe he apparently had flat feet, John Sydenham was playing for the first team when he was called up and was not the same player after his national service. perhaps we could start skaterelief, your donations are needed now, remember just £1000 can give 1 skate a `share` and hope, and the idea of a future! please give anything you can. for just £5 you can have a westwood freak mask and pj set! which would be the `red nose` of skaterelief. £2 a week can help 1 skate to be able to boooo his team for an entire season. in this day and age we can not allow a single fish to be unable to booo before during and at the end of the game, around the 75th min.

older heads - a goalkeeper, who would also help Gazza, and a CB. Hopefully,we can pick up some points until the Jan window when signings can be made and survival
made more certain.
I am not saying The Club signed the

The problem at Chelsea (and elsewhere) is that the guy who has the money is the same one who takes the day-to-day decisions.
Abramovich is 'up to the job' all the time that HE is in charge and it's HIS money to spend.

On Shaw, I would just add that he looks every inch a premiership left back already when he's on the pitch at st Mary's. and JWP looks like a young scholes, not just in appearance but also in possession.
If we can keep the center backs protected with cork plus spideman/ Davis for the rest of November and early jan, we are capable of surprising a lot of teams in the new year.
Wel l done Nigel for coming through the first ten games and showing all of us that he will learn and grow with the team. No silly subs in the last two games, no one on the bench who gives anything less than his very best for saints and a solid string formation that better balances attack with defense.
I'm really pleased with the direction we are now pointing. Bring on the toon!
Speaking of which, I for one will applaud pardew. Whatever went down with the wags, is none of my business. But I know for a fact that a large part of our success today comes from a team he built before Nigel gave it shape and belief.

pleased that shaw is doing so well, though i do feel that fox was made a scapegoat for all of the losses. what i am even more pleased about is the fact that our academy is producing player after player who have the ability to play well in the prem. this can only be a good thing for us, bringing through youngsters is the way forward. the academy will be funded by the players, who are not up to our standard, being sold on to other teams. the academy is the answer to our long term future success and i can not wait. i bet other clubs fans now wished that they had put some money into their academy instead of just buying overpriced overpaid players.
Even motd highlighted it with the dreaded yellow chevrons of shame.
Like everyone else, fox had to step up or step away. It's still in the balance, and he can regain credibility by supporting shaw in the last 20 mins or so while he develops.

pleased that shaw is doing so well, though i do feel that fox was made a scapegoat for all of the losses. what i am even more pleased about is the fact that our academy is producing player after player who have the ability to play well in the prem. this can only be a good thing for us, bringing through youngsters is the way forward. the academy will be funded by the players, who are not up to our standard, being sold on to other teams. the academy is the answer to our long term future success and i can not wait. i bet other clubs fans now wished that they had put some money into their academy instead of just buying overpriced overpaid players.
Even motd highlighted it with the dreaded yellow chevrons of shame.
Like everyone else, fox had to step up or step away. It's still in the balance, and he can regain credibility by supporting shaw in the last 20 mins or so while he develops.
Adkins can't play Shaw for a full game yet, so I guess we'll find out the answer to the Fox question in the next few games.

Allow Lallana to move infield more and have a very definite attacking option as running crosses can be a devastating counter attack.
If it results in a goal we then have the neccesary extra defender, Clyne, Fonte Shaw + Yoshida are all good enough to defend with Fox and Cork sitting in front defensive midfield.
Only need one of Lambert or Jayrod or even Mayuka up front for the counter attack.
A good option at the end of a tight away game. There will be some eventually, not every team is going to accomadate open attacking stuff and one of them will just stifle everything.

Shaw and Lala seem to have the same kind of understanding that Clyne and Punch have established on the right side in the last few games. Pulling AL into the middle means he wll still run those left channels he loves but gives him more freedom to feed from Cork and take away some of his defensive duties which are his weaker point.
It makes us a bit more defensive as a unit but in this league that's essential.

Once again CB FRY your memory is lacking as John Sydenam was an RAF national serviceman. Terry Paine was exempt from national sevice would you believe he apparently had flat feet, John Sydenham was playing for the first team when he was called up and was not the same player after his national service. I am also reliably informed that it was George Roughtly (not sure of the spelling there) who formed the Colts he was the Saints manager before Ted Bates and yes Ernie Jones was the spongeman in those days.
This ARMY side was obviously based somewhere in Hampshire to qualify to play in the Hants Cup.All their football league experience didn't do them any good because they were humbled by EAST COWES VICS the team SAINTS legend Nick Holmes played for in the 1980s when he left the dell.I always thought that this military team were based in Aldershot but who knows.Maybe someone who knows John S can get him to let us know.I think he may be living in Australia these days.no doubt you will correct me if i am wrong.
I would disagree strongly with you when you say that John Sydenham wasn't the same player when he came back from his national service.I think that his best years were in the mid 60's when we gained promotion to the top flight. Both him and Terry Paine were vital to the team, especially when the welshman Ron Davies ruled the roost. It was the crosses from both wingers that provided many a goal for the welsh dragon number 9.

Shaw is a great player but inexperienced, this Premier League game time is fantastic for him because it will mould him into a better player quite quickly due to his experience.
Either that or put Danny Fox back in. Anyone?
The answer is "if we want to try and stop being hammered" but if that happens the thing to do is send Cork/Davis/Schneider
lin back to cover the defence.
This means we keep attacking options on the pitch that can attack and try and get a goal, or at least keeps it away from the defence, which prevents us being attacked. When being thrashed if we take off a defender for an attacker that will make us sit back, and invite other teams onto us, and they way the defence is playing that is the last thing we want.
Attack is the best form of defence.
