Problems for Pards ahead of St Mary's return

ALAN PARDEW ALAN PARDEW

NEWCASTLE boss Alan Pardew is battling with more injury problems ahead of his first return to St Mary’s this Sunday.

Ben Arfa and Papa Cisse both went off injured during last night’s 1-1 home Europa League draw against Maritimo that assured the Magpies of qualification for the knockout stages..

Pardew said: "Ben Arfa's is a hamstring problem, so it will definitely keep him out on Sunday, and probably next week. I don't know from then on.

"I don't think it's a tear, according to the doctor, so it's not a long injury, but it will certainly keep him out for the immediate future.

"Cisse got a kick on the thigh and he was starting to limp with it because it tightened up over half-time, so unfortunately I had to take him off when I didn't really want to.

"With no striker on the bench, it was proving problematic."

Pardew will be able to welcome back midfielder Cheick Tiote from his European suspension for the game at the St Mary's Stadium, but skipper Fabricio Coloccini will sit out once again as he completes his three-game domestic ban.

Pardew has not given up hope of topping Europa League Group.

Victory over bottom-of-the-table Maritimo at St James' Park last night would have sent them to Bordeaux next month needing only a point to finish top of the pile.

However, substitute Fidelis' late equaliser, coupled with a 2-1 win for the Frenchmen over Club Brugge in Belgium means it is they who will take top spot if they avoid defeat.

Pardew will now turn his attention to Sunday's Barclays Premier League trip to former club Saints with injury and suspension biting deep into his squad, but is not ready to concede the group to Bordeaux.

He said: "The Bordeaux game, to be honest, if I took my strongest team there, it probably would still be difficult to try to win there.

"Nevertheless, we will go there with a team to win it. But I have to concentrate on the Premier League now.

"Our fans were singing, 'We're going up the league' - well, we need to win a game to go up the league, and we need to start on Sunday."

Newcastle looked to be on their way to victory when, with 23 minutes played, Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa slid an inviting pass into compatriot Sylvain Marveaux's run and looked on as he sprinted away from full-back Ruben Ferreira before finishing neatly.

But routine wins have been few and far between for the Magpies this season and after seeing a 37th-minute Papiss Cisse strike ruled out for offside, they wilted.

Their cause was not aided by the premature departures of both Ben Arfa and Cisse either side of half-time, and Maritimo sensed an opportunity.

They eventually forced their way back into the game with 11 minutes remaining when Fidelis blasted past the fatally exposed Tim Krul, and the striker might have snatched victory at the death when he volleyed across the face of goal.

A good time to play them methinks. The season has just started and the real Saints are starting to show. (any chance of Ba being injured training ?)

The only problem Pards will have is trying not to burst out laughing when he comes face to face with the hopeless orange faced Adkins.

Thanks Maritimo! With no recognized strikers available to face them, our defense has a chance to settle down and focus on the basics with less anxiety.

A draw or victory against Newcastle will be a big boost in the run up to Christmas.

He'll want to win this one more than any other game this season, which is why a Saints win would be especially sweet.

Equally, I reckon Nicola's like a kid before Christmas at the moment. He would absolutely LOVE to stick one over on Pards. I bet the team have been offered a massive win bonus for this one.

Newcastle had a great season last year and played some devastating attacking football. Pardew and Carr were rightly given a lot of kudos for the team they put together. It appears from the outside that they haven’t strengthened the squad enough to cope with the additional demands of European football ...... Perfect time for us to take full advantage.

I know that this is going to seem contradictory - moaning about the page rather than contributing, but here goes.
What's the purpose of comments on the Echo website? I enjoy reading the Echo articles. They give an alternative view on things going on with our club and the world of football, and often run stories the offical site chooses not to run. I have liked the comments section too. Rarely post anything myself though. But it does get awfully flabby with interplay between Portsmouth and Southampton fans about the rivalry. It scrolls for ages with people quoting each other and throwing back insults.
I like to hear what other Saints fans think about the squad and how they might do better next time or what is thought of the next opposition - I'm more interested in Newcastle than Portsmouth, but that interest will be replaced by Norwich soon!
Where is the interesting stuff that non football people think is boring: e.g. how we defend corners, should throw-ins be done differently? C'mon, lets get nerdy!

I have not looked at this site for a few days and it is refreshing to come back with a new perspective.

The most outstanding thing that I note is how extremely childish Kent the Kunt is appearing in his ever failing quotes which are born out of Skate mindless ramblings of a mad child on illegal substances. What a total fool. It is a real shame that there are people like him living in the world, but unfortunately we are told we have to accommodate them.

I would rather put Kunty Kent the Skunt on Portsea Island and block it off, keeping the rest of society safe from this fool and his silly little views.

These Skates make me laugh. Attention seeking whores the lot of them on here. They can't get the attention they so desire in the real world because their team is so **** so they resort to commenting on our site and even then nobody takes any notice. Very sad but it puts a smile on my face. :)

Wonder what the Newcastle fans would make of it if we all kept pointing at them on Sunday and chanting "sssssssshhhhhush"?

It's worked a treat on here with the WUMs and skunts who are beginning to sound rather desperate. It's as if they keep trying the "knock knock" joke and look increasingly daft after several days later when still nobody has said "Who's there?"

And as their attention seeking attempts get weaker and weaker they must be feeling increasingly inadequate - like a bloke who couldn't even ad lib a **** at a baked bean banquet.

Strange the Echo should ban the word f@rt when it's included in dictionaries.

I wonder if they think the average person asks a friend "Hey mate - have you just made an emission of intestinal gas from your anus?"

Anyone know which thigh Cisse took a knock on? Pardew could be over-stating the problem and Cisse may well be in their line-up. If we can identify the thigh then I can see Guly being used in the tunnel as some sort of giant ballboy who could stumble into Cisse and do to him what he did to Gaston. But he needs to know which thigh.

Frustrating referee.
HE was rubbish, continually stopped the game for minor issues, was sucked into players feigning injury.
He is another ref that has forgotten that football is a contact sport.
Anyway we have had to play 12 many times this season so what's new.

Newcastle game will be a tough test. I for one am not falling for this "injury" hit Toon team and this being a "good time to play them". If you look at their squad its clear they will pose problems and the games I have seen them in so far this season they had one thing coming through in bucket loads and thats unpredictability. The two managers are clearly capable but Pards had the edge I feel for tactics and so Nige will have to be at his best on Sunday and I think substitutions will be key. I am going for another 3-1 victory for one of the teams but I can not honestly say which one.....

As a saints supporter for forty-five years I am not deeply concerned about our position in the division. This is because I believe that I am today watching one of the GREAT Saints teams. Having seen last nights performance by Newcastle I know we CAN beat them, I also think we are more entertaining. Sunday will tell us, the fans have to be loud in their support. Six points in the next two games is a realistic ask. At five o'clock Sunday a clean goals conceded column would be a real bonus.COYR.

AP is a very good manager, who served Saints well and was unfairly axed by the Cortese.
I think Saints supporters should show AP respect and give him a decent reception, not forgetting that it was lwith the squad AP built, that Nigel won promotion.
AP is far more experienced than Nigel, and will certainly want to get one over on Cortese.
Injuries and European commitments have taken their toll on Newcastle in the same way as they have affected Chelsea.
The Newcastle Chairman isn't as fickle as Abramovich and recognised AP's qualities with an 8 year contract.
One away win from 6 against a very poor, rock bottom, QPR, doesn't make Saints a wonder team, anymore than one good display from Puncheon makes him an England prospect.
I think AP will want to win this one more than any other game this season and will come back to SMS with some tricks up his sleeve.
Newcastle to win by the odd goal.

I am sorry you chose, once again, to make up a story besmirching Nicola Cortese. When Alan Pardew was sacked, it was quoted that the reason was that low morale at the Club was having a bad effect. He had lost the respect of the staff and the dressing room (possibly the unsubstantiated story about an indiscretion with a players wife may have had something to do with it), apparently Markus Liebherr, before he passed away, had been pushing for his dismisal. Obviously something was wrong within the Club at that time. No doubt Pardew left with a suitable pay off, and has never denied any of the rumours, only saying that he was finding it "tough" to work with Nicola, who pushing hard to realise Markus Liebherrs dream. Pardew has an eight year contract, but anyone will be aware that even this is tenuous and a bad run of results could soon change that. I guess that you too want Newcastle to win this one, hardly the opinion of a genuine Saints supporter is it?

Hadn't crossed my mind about sparky but I am sure pardew will have his players up for the game but agree good time to play them . A lot to be said about playing teams at the right time during the season,
after a euro match , during suspensions or injuries , during a slump in form or later in the season when they have an fa cup semi or quarter final or have reached enough points to be safe , luck of the draw

I think if you have a throw-in in your own half you should have the option to take it one handed as well.

You are free, as am I, to voice your opinions but neither you or I know the real reasons for AP's sacking, so any opinions are conjecture, the truth is known to only AP and Cortese.
I do not know for sure but I understand that when football managers or any senior official in industry gets the bullet, most pay offs include a non disclosure clause
Hence we may never know why Cortes fired AP.
What is indisputable is that AP is a great manager, who took us to the brink of the playoffs from a 10 point deficit, won the JPT and built up a squad, including Rickie, which, with very little additions or changes Nigel achieved promotion.
To deny otherwise is just sour grapes, AP served Saints well and deserves respect and a warm welcome back to SMS on Sunday.

We may not always agree on Saints' tactics etc. but one thing we do agree on is that this column is seriously undermined and devalued by all the cr*p that goes on between the cretins of Saints and the cretins of Portsmouth.
Maybe the Echo should start the cretins very own column under the heading Broadmoor Unlimited -- that way sensible contributors can give the mentally challenged from whatever side, a wide berth!

there is a fundamental flaw in that idea of a cretins only column.and that is the fact that, tebourba would be the only poster.

give it up mush it's getting tedious now.

I would rather read the ramblings of cretins than the innaccurate invented and inane comments of a fixated, obsessed, biased megalomaniac whose sole purpose is to manipulate truth, distort fact and generally denegrate the character of someone who cannot openly defend themselves on this forum.

Just saying!

At 3.11pm Tebourba said this - AP is a very good manager, who served Saints well and was unfairly axed by the Cortese

To tell you the truth, before I responded to your post, I spent a lot of time on Google, seeking out the reasons for AP's dismissal, conspiracy theorists had a field day, but there is very little true evidence to explain why. It was clear that Alan Pardew and Nicola Cortese had fallen out, so for whatever the reasons, it was clear that things could not continue as they were. I still can find no reason for your continued hate campaign against Nicola, he has carried out his work in a reserved and efficient manner, yes there have been the odd blips, for which we have had no explanation, that is because everything is done within the Club and not aired across the Press, for obvious reasons. I would say that Alan Pardew is a good football manager, when he went to Newcastle, he already had a good deck to play with, and has dealt his cards well, but he hasn't aspired to being great, yet, in my opinion. No sour grapes from me I thank Alan for what he did while he was with us, things didn't work out and Nigel has improved on what Alan started, I am not convinced that Alan would have got us to the Premier as quick as we in fact have, but would no doubt have been capable had he had the chance. This week he is on the other side, we need to get a result more than they do and I suspect it will be down to the team that want to win most, may the best team win, and we all know which team that is, don't we?
