Adkins: I don't owe Pardew anything
6:00pm Friday 23rd November 2012 in Sport
Saints manager Nigel Adkins has told Alan Pardew ahead of his return to St Mary’s that he doesn’t owe him “any debt of gratitude at all”.
Pardew, who is now in charge of Newcastle, will return to the club on Sunday for the first time since he was sacked in August 2010.
Adkins succeeded the 51-year-old at St Mary’s and won promotion from League One using a team largely built by his predecessor.
Since then, though, the incumbent manager has taken the club to new heights, leading them to the Premier League, and evolving the squad into his own.
Some of Pardew’s acquisitions still remain key components of Adkins’ side, however, notably top scorer Rickie Lambert and also centre half Jose Fonte.
But the Saints manager insists he has no reason to thank Pardew for anything.
“I don’t think I owe him any debt of gratitude at all,” said Adkins. “Whatever situation arose, he moved on. I am the manager of Southampton Football Club.
“We’ve just had back-to-back promotions, we’re doing ever so well in our forward progression.”
Adkins says that Pardew will be treated the same as any other visiting manager when he arrives back at the stadium, and that he will be invited to share a drink after the match.
“We always welcome the opposition manager, whoever it is, to St Mary’s,” said Adkins, who has no new injury concerns ahead of tomorrow’s contest.
“When the whistle blows, then it is go to win a game of football.
“Afterwards we always invite them in for a drink. We’ve done that consistently. It doesn’t matter who the manager is, that is what we’ve always done and what we will continue to do.”

I assume this is a quote out of context.
Both of these gentlemen have been important to the rally of the Saints since 2009. And Nigel is still the man. I'll applaud them both.
We can win this one, let's look to beat a drifting Newcastle, no matter who is at the helm there.

There is some substance to this story as it was reported by the BBC sport programme at the time. But I guess we will never know for sure will we?

As for NA avoiding relegation this season is all that is left (hopefully that task is not already beyond him).
Even so with so many players likely to be missing for Newcastle then they must be there for the taking this week end. If we are to survive it is vital that Saints take this opportunity for 3 points.

Nigel may well feel that he doesn't owe anything to Pardew, but I think we Saints fans do. Pardew kick started our journey back to the Premiership, signed most of the players who got us there, and gave us that great day out at Wembley. So I hope he gets a decent reception before the game on Sunday - though after kick-off all the chanting will be for Nigel !
Nigel took over a good side and the momentum took it to the Premier League, but Nigel will have an extremely difficult job to keep it there without reinforcements in January.
If Nigel had taken over the dispirited team that Pardew did, I very much doubt that he would now be managing a Premier League team.

My view on your first point is that, in relative terms, I would say it's not an easy call between NA and AP as to who has performed best since 2010.
They've both achieved a great deal, in fact. The metaphor would use is AP and NA are now on the third lap around the circuit -- but while AP has been running on a top class running track on the first and second laps, NA spent the first lap slogging through a middy field in hobnail boots, and the second lap wading through molasses in doc martins, and he needed to come out ahead of both those races just to get to the fancy running track.
Sure, Newcastle under AP have done well, and good for them. But don't forget that while Newcastle spent the offseason fine-tuning their running kit, saints had to spend it trying to get ahold of a proper running kit in the first place.

Do they think I am the only one?
Nigel may well have used those words in response to a question like" do you think you owe Pardew?" in that context the answer is reasonable.
Another question should be, "Does Pardew realise he should be grateful to Saints for the oppurtunity he was given".
Also, " does the Echo realise how many more papers it would sell if it started to support the local team?"
I support the Saints.

Nigel inherited the squad that AP built, including Rickie and with very few changes or additions won promotion.

Silly comments from NA in view of the fact he inherited a ready made team from AP. He could easily have said a few polite words!
Remember the Nige-Hughes "El Sackio" showdown was only a week ago. But events do seem to be unfolding with a certain inevitability, and I fear that our next bad result will see Cortese replace Nige with Di Matteo.”

Glenda came in and we played some very clever football with the same group of players. Hoddle had terrible man management skills, which have been well documented, but his tactical nous was brilliant!

Sorry but Nigel is being being "big headed" there.
When Glen Hoddle took over from Dave Jones he took the credit for a team built by Dave. Same difference .
For me, the difference between Hoddle and Pardew (and I don't know why he was sacked) is that I would happily welcome Pardew back but Hoddle (IMO) walked out without even saying goodbye to the players and paid Le Tiss the ultimate insult by promising (and then not obliging) him with a word or two in the Le Tiss testimonial programme. Git!
So, thanks for coming, building a team, winning a load of games and stabilising the club, Pards, so long and thanks for all the fish!

You people riding on the negetive bus with four flat tyres will never be able to keep up with the possitive bus. On this bus there is no room for the doom and gloom negetivity that the Daily Echo keep fueling their pages with, so the negetive passengers can take up their pens and start, the manager must win the next game or taxi for NIGEL ffs.

What ever floats your boat, but at least pick up your pen and write praise when deserved. You might even find it fun ??. I just hope you will not be to disappointed when we stay up this season with Nigel still our manager.
