Nigel Adkins hails his Saints team after their 2-0 win over Alan Pardew's Newcastle
5:40pm Sunday 25th November 2012 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Nigel Adkins
Nigel Adkins hailed a complete performance from his team, as Saints moved out of the Premier League’s bottom three with a 2-0 win against Newcastle at St Mary’s.
Goals from Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez ensured a comfortable victory for the hosts, who were unlucky not to triumph by an even greater margin.
While Adkins was delighted with the verve the side displayed going forward, he was also thrilled with a first clean sheet of the campaign.
“It was good. We’ve got a 2-0 victory, a clean sheet, which is what we’ve been striving for, which was really pleasing for the whole team, especially the defenders, because they’ve worked ever so hard,” he said.
“There’s a stability in team selection at the back, which has obviously been of benefit. But we played against a top forward line in Newcastle today and we’ve marshalled them very, very well, so I’m delighted for the defenders.
“Paulo’s made a good save in goal. Jose and Maya at the centre of defence have done very well, and so has Clyney and Luke Shaw.
“It’s pleasing. We’ve got a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory, we could have scored some more. Their goalkeeper’s made some really good saves. Jay Rodriguez’s goal, having viewed it, looks as though it was onside, although the linesman’s flagged for offside, and there’s a shout for a penalty claim as well.
“I thought some of the attacking football was really, really good, and our defensive resolve and the shape about the team was really pleasing.”

Corky just shaded m.o.t.m. For me but lallana, Ricky, gaston, clyne, or punch all in contention.
Only worry, we do give teams too much time on the ball. Newcastle looked very average possibly jaded from their European game but still had a few chances. But we should have been out of site any way!
Bill, I think your monies safe. The players are playing for Adkins and unless something drastic happens he should remain, it would be good for a young English manager to be given time and room to make mistakes and move forward, and we wil.
Did any one else see the mascot dancing?......... The evening started there!

I agree with your m.o.m. ideas. And I would add gazzaniga, who was assured all night and pulled off n amazing save to keep it 2-0 with ten mins to go.

Confidence now seems high throughout the whole squad and we appear to be thriving on each game as it comes. Cork,Puncheon and Luke Shaw look like new signings that are starting to be consistent in each game. Nath Clyne and Ramirez are also getting better and better by the week. Adam and Rickie are starting to fire on all cylinders and the defence and Gazza in goal also seem to be oozing that swagger that we are accustomed to. The fans are absolutely loving it and poopey are still sh!t. We've picked up 7 points out of 9 and I feel another 3 points will be on their way on Wednesday after we beat Norwich.
An excellent result made all the pleasurable due to a clean sheet. Just 2 goals conceded in last three games. The defence must take heart from this and confidence enhanced. It is worth noting only 8 teams have scored more goals than the Saints. With the understanding developing rapidly throughout the team the goals will continue to be scored so there is only one way to go and that is UP.
All in all it's looking good and the Saints continue to march on with our superb manager and backroom staff all on the bus again.

We have been playing much much better since CORK has returned. His play in front of the back four has taken some of the preasure off of them and allows Morgan to get foward.
Three home games out of the next four gives us a golden chance to enhance our position in the league table. The bus is moving in the right direction , being driven by a qualified driver that, in my opion will get us to our destination safe and sound.

Was wondering if the p*ss poor weather would benefit the northerns as I thought they might just be used to it, but we had our best spells and scored both goals in the driving rain!!
Gazzaniga had a great game with superb saves and great distribution and he was even kind enough to give a balooned clearance for the pundits to shake their heads over before he deftly caught it.
Ramirez was my man of the match. He was all ovet the pitch and he was absolutely amazing!!!

We could get a result against Liverpool because Rodgers is more concerned about the look than the result.

Probably the best since we were taking teams apart this time last year.
What a follow up from QPR.
Jack Cork was enormous,he picked up loose ball from the defence turned defence into attack.
He was our best player closely followed by the rest.
Gaston is a marvel.
What a fantastic save by Gazza.
I was directly behide he looked completely beaten .
How did he stop it, Idont know!
The best stop I have seen in absolutey years.

Steven Davis put in a good shift replacing gaston.
Newcastle did have their chances, but that gave gazza a chance to shine.
We still need to mark up and close down quicker. Norwich will be a tougher test but winnable.
I think we will get something out of Liverpool too!

Its gone pretty much as expected. We have been unlucky in several games, the two Manx games, Swansea and Fulham should have given us more points than they did. Coming to the prem with only one recognized prem player and a manager with no prem experience and half the team new players, was always going to mean a slow start. Its been a tough baptism yet the side is growing together and we have an astute manager whose prem experience is growing with every game.
The fans backing for both has been fantastic.Keep the faith we will be okay.
Great win today.
As for those that come on here from down the road and talk of passionate fans. You are so passionate your gates are 50% of ours when we were in the same division.

We have been playing much much better since CORK has returned. His play in front of the back four has taken some of the preasure off of them and allows Morgan to get foward.

Credit to Nicola Cortese who unlike some chairman sack their manager at the first drop in form kept with Nigel.
We are playing some breathtaking football abd it is nice to hear the pundits on tv say the same.
My voice is barely working tonight, the constant singing and shouting throughout the game has killed my voice box. But it's worth it, there is nothing better than the atmosphere at St Mary's when both the team and the fans are on form. Again, the pundits are also praising the vocal support of saints fans, even when we were not winning games. I would mention our blue few and their so called bestest fans ever (tm), but to be honest I can't be bothered, as they are far too insignificant now. As the commentator said on sky's football first, "today was all about southampton, a complete performance, no team will fancy playing them at the moment", he is so right.
Well done Saints, every player was superb today and Nigel, you are a Saint I hope for many many years to come.

We found our feet last year on our way up. what alot of people forget is that Saints start to the season has been really tough - we've played ALL of the top sides before the end of november.
Only now are we coming up against the teams we could reasonably expect to be beating.
And don't forget to look at the manner of our defeat. We've taken alot of the top sides right to the end of the game before they got the winner.
Of course, Arsenal was justone of those horrible matches that come along once in a while where it just doesn't work out. You forget those and move on.

Yes, thought Fonte (or is it Font?!) had a great game too

Taxi for orangehead !!!! Newcastle are that bad they would make QPR look like Barca...
Last two weeks I have seen the games with a QPR fan in their end and yesterday at St Mary's with a Newcastle fan sat in our end, no issues just sensible football debate both times. Both times they came away saying we were the better team which we were.
The guy further up the Board (Mark someone) who is a Pompey fan is welcome here if he is going to debate properly and enjoy banter, you don't post banter, just inane drivel.
It is sad and I woud be saying this if we were bottom of L2 a place you are very likely to be this time next year IF you survive. for the likes of Mark and his ilk I hope you do, for the likes of you and your ilk I hope you don't
Accept that your sad little life is so pathetic this is all you have, I actually feel sorry for you

Pompey fan here, just watched u lot on MOTD2 and thought u were superb, looks like your finding your feet, well done
up the football league we go.

I'd have spotted this sooner, had I not been on the sauce yesterday :-)
Thoroughly deserved win, clean sheet and an apology from me to Adam, who is showing his capabilities as captain. Well done all.

Typical one sided --see only one team on the pitch -- Saints can do know wrong -- Cortese and Nigel should receive a knighthood --- happy clappers.
Wait until Saints play Newcastle's first team!
