LYMINGTON’S Ben Ainslie is a rank outsider with the bookies to land the BBC Sports Personality of the Year title.

He is a 150-1 shot with William Hill, with Bradley Wiggins at 2/5 the clear favourite .

In terms of number of bets, Jess Ennis is clearly ahead. Since the book opened in January, she has attracted 21% of the total bets, with Andy Murray 17%, Bradley Wiggins 16% and Mo Farah 15%.

“In the past the number of the bets has often been a better indicator of who should be in pole position and our stats suggest that Bradley has some serious competition from Jess,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.

William Hill predict that the 2012 BBC Sports Personality will be the busiest in its history with over £100,000 already bet on the award. The biggest bet to date is a £6,000 wager placed by a Hills customer from Inverness, who has wagered £6,000 at 4/6 on Wiggins in late September. “With so many astonishing sporting feats this year we are certain to see record turnover,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.
