Jon Fernandes hopes to create his own piece of history by becoming the first Southampton boxer for a decade to win a Southern Area title in his own city.

Matthew Barney was the last to achieve that feat, taking the super middleweight belt against Hussain Osman back in 2002.

The venue is also the same with both that contest and tonight’s taking place at the prestigious Southampton Guildhall venue.

The last Southampton based fighter to try his luck at home at Southern Area level was Colin Kenna in 2006, but that night ended in disappointment as Micky Steeds took a points verdict.

Fernandes has a tough match up against Jamie Speight for the super bantamweight belt but has home advantage on his side.

“It’s great to be fighting for this title in Southampton,” said the 28-year-old.

“I’ve sold loads of tickets because it’s so close to home that people have really want to come and support me which I’m really grateful for and hopefully it will be a great atmosphere.

“The whole scenario is easier when you are at home and you don’t have to travel and so I am going to try and use that to my advantage.

“I know this won’t be an easy fight but I’ve prepared well and will give it my all on the night and, if I perform, I’m confident I will win.”

Fernandes’ trainer, Wayne Batten, added: “I believe Jon is ready for championship level.

“To be honest I really believe that Jon can move up to the next championship level as well but first and foremost we are focussed on this fight because we have respect for Jamie Speight.

“I’ve got 100 per cent confidence in Jon and I wouldn’t be putting him in there if I didn’t think he was ready for this.”

The Guildhall show is set for a nine fight bill. Doors open at 6pm with boxing starting at 7pm after entertainment from local band Leigh Samuel Taylor.

Remaining tickets are available via the box office on 023 8063 2601 or on the door.
