Saints stay out of bottom three
7:42am Sunday 16th December 2012 in Sport
Aston Villa's Bradley Guzan (left) exchanges words with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez at Anfield.
SAINTS stayed out of the bottom three in the Premier League after a set of mixed results on Saturday.
QPR gave Harry Redknapp a boost with a 2-1 win over Fulham and Aston Villa scored a shock win at Liverpool.
But Norwich kept Wigan below Saints with a 2-1 beating and Sunderland and Newcastle both lost.
Manchester United maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side produced a convincing display with Robin van Persie and Tom Cleverley netting inside the opening 20 minutes.
Van Persie then brilliantly set up Wayne Rooney on the hour to seal a fifth consecutive league win. Substitute Fraizer Campbell grabbed a consolation for the Black Cats on 72 minutes.
QPR hauled themselves off the foot of the table with a belated first win of the season – 2-1 over Fulham.
Adel Taarabt’s quickfire double in the second half finally secured victory after 17 games and lifted Harry Redknapp’s side above Reading, who host Arsenal on Monday night.
Mladen Petric pulled a goal back two minutes from time but it served only to make QPR sweat for a win that the home fans celebrated at the final whistle.
Aston Villa produced the shock of the day as they thumped Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield.
Christian Benteke struck twice, either side of an Andreas Weimann goal, to inflict a first home loss on the Reds in six. Steven Gerrard curled in a late goal but by then a majority of the home fans had left.
Ex-Saint Kenwyne Jones scored his first league goal in more than a year as Stoke battled back to draw 1-1 at home to Everton.
Ryan Shawcross gifted the Toffees a first-half lead when he headed over his own goalkeeper but Jones levelled when he outjumped Phil Jagielka to head in on 52 minutes.
In-form Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini could find himself in hot water after he appeared to headbutt Shawcross during the second half, with referee Mark Halsey missing the incident.
Wes Hoolahan marked his new Norwich contract with the match-winner in a 2-1 success over Wigan.
The Canaries announced just before kick-off that Hoolahan had penned a new deal until 2015 and the Republic of Ireland midfielder took centre stage.
He robbed a defender to set up Anthony Pilkington’s opener and, after Shaun Maloney equalised, Hoolahan secured a third successive league win in the 64th minute.

I've been pestering the BBC to admit we all know this and to make the programme more realistic by showing in every Eastenders episode the Eastenders cast watching themselves watching Eastenders on Eastenders.
The BBC would like to think that we don't know the Eastenders people watch Eastenders, but now I've told them, they know we know - so it's a known known.

Not going to happen.

As well as Best and Idiotohf**k, maybe there were only 2 others. It could have been BWP, Jones or, as I suggested earlier, Oakley or Higginbotham or any from among those other frequent passers by that came and went between 2005 and 2009.

There are known unknowns; that is to say there are things that, we now know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know. FFS!

My former boss in Winchester was a race lover. He did Silverstone most years and went once or twice to Le Mans.
My wife (Portuguese to the core) actually grew up there and we keep saying we'll visit. Not sure she does anything that continues for a whole 24 hours, though.

QPR are likely to struggle off and on, do not see this game being the big turning point.
WHU are coming to join us in the battle at the bottom and Villa will not escape for a while.
Newcastle are the example of a club overachieving and paying for it the following season.
I believe there will 8 - 9 clubs battling it out at the bottom and we will be amongst them but at the top of it.
To finish 11 - 12 would be a good start to Premier life and would give us the chance to add to the squad with top class players. Though do we need to buy with the young squad we have and an excellent youth system?

Of course other teams' results play a part in any team's position in the League.
I'm old enough to remember that when Saints were promoted to Division 1 in 1966, in the final quarter of the season, Porsmouth beat everyone of Saints' rivals for promotion, giving Saints a huge advantage
In those days, there was mutual respect by both teams' supporters and the Saints suporters were grateful to Pompey for their help!

Awful lot of truth in what you say. Thoroughly enjoyed our 2 seasons in league one - great atmosphere, well over 20,000 at home games, good friendly banter at away games, all without costing a fortune.
I have been a season ticket holder at Southampton since 1972, but the costs are now getting ridiculous. Away tickets for Chelsea at £48.00 & £43.00 at QPR.
And I resent having to pay £2.00 for a sub standard cup of coffee at St Marys - to cap it all the cups are smaller this season.
Lets face it, in the premier league, other than the top 6 clubs, all the rest are involved in a relegation battle each season from day one!

The last miss which condemned us was the last (and almost only) kick by the guy we bought from Derby wasn't it? Good player, always injured, scored at least one dodgy pen against us while diving (I mean 'playing') for Derby; just can't remember his name.

Bloödy kelwyn Jones..cost us promotion with that infant powered penalty against Derby, however the club would actually not be in the shape it is now had he scored...weird eh.
Watching Norwich on stream yesterday I knew KNEW if we had gone about it with some belief we could of beaten LFC...
I am sure the gaffer will not be blind to this, we are going to (have) take some big scalps...stupid thing is play our game and don't panic Mr Mainwareing and we already would have..

I reckon SPOTY was a fix, no way could I get my vote in, text, BT direct or mobile.
The TV voting these days is a massive con. The amount of money the phone company makes is incredible and its shared with the likes of Simon Cowell ,.. and in this case the BBC. There must be thousands of voters watching who dont even know they are being charged !
You never see anyone on Eastenders ringing in to vote do you ?

The amazing support, dirty Derby (they really didn't deserve to go up, but I think WBA would have deserved it more than us anyway to be fair). I can't remember all the pens but Best definitely missed the first - brave of the kid to go forward. Who else took pens that night? Oakley? Higginbotham?

Its a pretty intimidating place which helps them get away with their roughhouse tactics. But lumping it up to Ricky hoping to draw a free kick won't work because the percentges will go their way. Better to play through them.
What is your slant on the Fellaini situation? If the referee isn't capable of giving him some fair protection, the Stoke holding tactics were appalling, then eventually a player is going to take thing into his own hands. Can't condone it, what Fellaini did was wrong, but why did the officials not spot it, did they decide that the Stoke player got what he deserved? Rickie can expect the same "all in wrestling" when we play them, how will he react if the Officials don't put a stop to it.
