Saints stay out of bottom three

SAINTS stayed out of the bottom three in the Premier League after a set of mixed results on Saturday.

QPR gave Harry Redknapp a boost with a 2-1 win over Fulham and Aston Villa scored a shock win at Liverpool.

But Norwich kept Wigan below Saints with a 2-1 beating and Sunderland and Newcastle both lost.

Manchester United maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side produced a convincing display with Robin van Persie and Tom Cleverley netting inside the opening 20 minutes.

Van Persie then brilliantly set up Wayne Rooney on the hour to seal a fifth consecutive league win. Substitute Fraizer Campbell grabbed a consolation for the Black Cats on 72 minutes.

QPR hauled themselves off the foot of the table with a belated first win of the season – 2-1 over Fulham.

Adel Taarabt’s quickfire double in the second half finally secured victory after 17 games and lifted Harry Redknapp’s side above Reading, who host Arsenal on Monday night.

Mladen Petric pulled a goal back two minutes from time but it served only to make QPR sweat for a win that the home fans celebrated at the final whistle.

Aston Villa produced the shock of the day as they thumped Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield.

Christian Benteke struck twice, either side of an Andreas Weimann goal, to inflict a first home loss on the Reds in six. Steven Gerrard curled in a late goal but by then a majority of the home fans had left.

Ex-Saint Kenwyne Jones scored his first league goal in more than a year as Stoke battled back to draw 1-1 at home to Everton.

Ryan Shawcross gifted the Toffees a first-half lead when he headed over his own goalkeeper but Jones levelled when he outjumped Phil Jagielka to head in on 52 minutes.

In-form Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini could find himself in hot water after he appeared to headbutt Shawcross during the second half, with referee Mark Halsey missing the incident.

Wes Hoolahan marked his new Norwich contract with the match-winner in a 2-1 success over Wigan.

The Canaries announced just before kick-off that Hoolahan had penned a new deal until 2015 and the Republic of Ireland midfielder took centre stage.

He robbed a defender to set up Anthony Pilkington’s opener and, after Shaun Maloney equalised, Hoolahan secured a third successive league win in the 64th minute.

There are known knowns; there are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns; that is to say there are things that, we now know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know. FFS!

Spot on. I know that we all know that we never see the people on East Enders watching the telly. Yet I think thick people like that would be watching the telly nearly all the time - and it's obvious they would be watching Eastenders in particular a lot because they are in it.

I've been pestering the BBC to admit we all know this and to make the programme more realistic by showing in every Eastenders episode the Eastenders cast watching themselves watching Eastenders on Eastenders.

The BBC would like to think that we don't know the Eastenders people watch Eastenders, but now I've told them, they know we know - so it's a known known.

From what I've seen of Eastenders, no one on there would EVER watch the BBC. They're definitely ITV viewers. That's why the Beeb won't let them be filmed watching the TV. It would encourage viewers to turn over and watch what was on the other side. Either that, or none of them have bought their TV licence, of course.

As for known knowns, as I sometimes tell my students, 'I know a snowman's nose knows no better smell than that of that carrott that he knows is not his nose.'

See, confuse the French just once a day and the world immediately becomes a happier place, and I should know!

I remember watching at a pub in Reading. The amazing support, dirty Derby (they really didn't deserve to go up, but I think WBA would have deserved it more than us anyway to be fair). I can't remember all the pens but Best definitely missed the first - brave of the kid to go forward. Who else took pens that night? Oakley? Higginbotham? The last miss which condemned us was the last (and almost only) kick by the guy we bought from Derby wasn't it? Good player, always injured, scored at least one dodgy pen against us while diving (I mean 'playing') for Derby; just can't remember his name.

Of course other teams' results play a part in any team's position in the League.
I'm old enough to remember that when Saints were promoted to Division 1 in 1966, in the final quarter of the season, Porsmouth beat everyone of Saints' rivals for promotion, giving Saints a huge advantage
In those days, there was mutual respect by both teams' supporters and the Saints suporters were grateful to Pompey for their help!
How times have changed for the worse

At the time, as he walked up to take the kick, I was calling his name out over and over in my head ...... 'Idiakez, Idiakez, Idiakez .... (he took the kick .... and I shouted) .... IDI-OTOHF**K!!!' and left the pub.

Still, (with my best George Formby voice) it's turned out nice again, hasn't it?

I had Id????? but couldn't remember the rest. Strasbourg Saint

I really can't remember who took the ones that went in. It's like any bad news, it's sort of been erased from my mind. I guess, in a year or two, some people will have forgotten that they were liquidised in 2013.

As well as Best and Idiotohf**k, maybe there were only 2 others. It could have been BWP, Jones or, as I suggested earlier, Oakley or Higginbotham or any from among those other frequent passers by that came and went between 2005 and 2009.

I think the point is, over the whole season, we stand or fall by what WE (well, the players, managerial team and, perhaps, the fans who can get to games) achieve. Plus or minus a point, we'll end somewhere between first and twentieth because of the points we gain.

As for this weekend's matches, the one that stood out for me was Sunderland Ladies who put seven past Pompey's gals (six by half time). When the chips are down, nothing goes your way, does it?

I know you know.

Jones didnt play in that playoff game. Best hit the first pen wide, guess you need to check yor facts before posting old son!
I could have sworn it was Jones not first penalty our last??
I remember watching at a pub in Reading. The amazing support, dirty Derby (they really didn't deserve to go up, but I think WBA would have deserved it more than us anyway to be fair). I can't remember all the pens but Best definitely missed the first - brave of the kid to go forward. Who else took pens that night? Oakley? Higginbotham? The last miss which condemned us was the last (and almost only) kick by the guy we bought from Derby wasn't it? Good player, always injured, scored at least one dodgy pen against us while diving (I mean 'playing') for Derby; just can't remember his name.
Strassy watched it in the Potters bar in Zermatt..
Is that where you live? Must be beautiful. We keep saying we'll do more travelling around Europe - long weekends in Germany, Austria etc - but we're just too busy.

Maybe in the spring well fit in a trip to Switzerland and come for a drink and a match on Sky in your neck of the woods.

My former boss in Winchester was a race lover. He did Silverstone most years and went once or twice to Le Mans.

My wife (Portuguese to the core) actually grew up there and we keep saying we'll visit. Not sure she does anything that continues for a whole 24 hours, though.

Oh, wait a minute, when we're in a hurry to go out, she takes about that long in the bathroom perming her nails or some such thing. Women!

While it is true that we can not influence games that we do not play in, we can hope that the teams around us continue to struggle.
QPR are likely to struggle off and on, do not see this game being the big turning point.
WHU are coming to join us in the battle at the bottom and Villa will not escape for a while.
Newcastle are the example of a club overachieving and paying for it the following season.
I believe there will 8 - 9 clubs battling it out at the bottom and we will be amongst them but at the top of it.
To finish 11 - 12 would be a good start to Premier life and would give us the chance to add to the squad with top class players. Though do we need to buy with the young squad we have and an excellent youth system?

i agree , my point is that we've come out of it ok ....... could have been worse .
Yes wigan nearly got a point and what do you think of QPR will they be be on the up now ?
i really hope not , nothing against QPR but their manager should be in prison (imo) ....... i loath that man !
well we both got stitched up cant see him putting some money in to save pompey
cant see his dog doing that .he just enjoyed being richly overpaid taken thev money off pompey when he knew they could not afford it aswell,as for qpr ok they won .but still had 22 shots against them the home team and rode there luck at times despite harrys comments .still cant see them getting forty points or reading .but its going tom be a mighty big battle to avoid the 3rd place .and the 2 north east clubs look vulnerable at the moment

I've made a point of streaming a couple of our U21 games. We have some great talent coming through...but I still think the step up to first team Prem football is a massive one. Only the cream of the crop will make it (as per JWP and Shaw).
Hence, I'm quite sure we will still need to strengthen come January.

that's the managers dilemma though bill.If he brings in to many It chokes off the route for the kids.but If he doesn't strengthen in the window, he's then risking our prem status.I'm glad It's not my problem, but I'll back mr adkins to get It right........

We currently have a forward and a centre back who are drawing attention.
Luke Shaw has made the step up and JWP has some experience and will get more.
Ben Reeves is at the edge of the first team and might make the step up soon.
What I would really like is for us to unearth is a big monster enforcer.
None to buy anywhere, so going to have to make our own!

Now off to the kitchen to grill a dourado.

She's Portuguese and she tells me I'm the only one in the house who can grill a fish. Years of practice on here, I guess.

yeah, I agree slugger the chance is there for any of the yougsters If they are good enough.the trouble is do they strengthen in the window,in which case that narrows those chances down a bit.
It's a bit of a juggling act for the manager really.

By then the young talented and fast learning Saints squad will be more than 10 points ahead of the QPR mercenaries. Losing Tarabt for the Africa Cup will only add to their misery.

Awful lot of truth in what you say. Thoroughly enjoyed our 2 seasons in league one - great atmosphere, well over 20,000 at home games, good friendly banter at away games, all without costing a fortune.
I have been a season ticket holder at Southampton since 1972, but the costs are now getting ridiculous. Away tickets for Chelsea at £48.00 & £43.00 at QPR.
And I resent having to pay £2.00 for a sub standard cup of coffee at St Marys - to cap it all the cups are smaller this season.
Lets face it, in the premier league, other than the top 6 clubs, all the rest are involved in a relegation battle each season from day one!
on news siten i agree .

We now live in Montreux so that's a bit nearer...we still go to Zermatt stunning place and unusual for Switzerland great really great food..

because the average skunt has a very poor understanding of english and spelling is not one of their better skills they don't realise their club is DYING they think it's just changing colour.
Ha! The thing is, if you offered most of them a straight choice:
1) change (dye) your shirts from blue to red and white stripes, or:
2) get liquidised.

They'd sooner opt for 2.

Stupid skunts!

TV voting has never been the same since Hughie Green and his clapometer. Then after the programme everyone used to send in postcards to vote .. brilliant idea.AND It didnt cost £1.50 or more to vote !!

The TV voting these days is a massive con. The amount of money the phone company makes is incredible and its shared with the likes of Simon Cowell ,.. and in this case the BBC. There must be thousands of voters watching who dont even know they are being charged !

You never see anyone on Eastenders ringing in to vote do you ?

What is your slant on the Fellaini situation? If the referee isn't capable of giving him some fair protection, the Stoke holding tactics were appalling, then eventually a player is going to take thing into his own hands. Can't condone it, what Fellaini did was wrong, but why did the officials not spot it, did they decide that the Stoke player got what he deserved? Rickie can expect the same "all in wrestling" when we play them, how will he react if the Officials don't put a stop to it.

I think Fellaini should get a ban long enough to miss the game at St Marys so thats about 8 games. But you are right what you are saying looking forward to Stoke away should be a decent atmosphere hope we fill away end

Bloödy kelwyn Jones..cost us promotion with that infant powered penalty against Derby, however the club would actually not be in the shape it is now had he scored...weird eh.

Watching Norwich on stream yesterday I knew KNEW if we had gone about it with some belief we could of beaten LFC...

I am sure the gaffer will not be blind to this, we are going to (have) take some big scalps...stupid thing is play our game and don't panic Mr Mainwareing and we already would have..
Good player, always injured, scored at least one dodgy pen against us while diving (I mean 'playing') for Derby; just can't remember his name.
wasn't it Idiotico Idiakez who missed the penalty- the overpaid Spanish player favoured by the booze addled Burley

Stoke are an appalling team and their manager is a disgrace - taking football back to the dark ages. Its a pretty intimidating place which helps them get away with their roughhouse tactics. But lumping it up to Ricky hoping to draw a free kick won't work because the percentges will go their way. Better to play through them.
