Ormerod: Rickie is a new Matt Le Tissier

Ormerod: Rickie is a new Matt Le Tissier Ormerod: Rickie is a new Matt Le Tissier

SAINTS cult hero Brett Ormerod has been delighted to see Rickie Lambert follow his path from Blackpool to the Premier League.

When Lambert made his Football League debut on the opening day of the 1999-2000 season, it was for a Blackpool side leading Wrexham 2-0 through an Ormerod brace.

Lambert and Ormerod did not play together again, but both went on to star for Saints in the top flight and are still in contact.

They first crossed paths when Lambert joined his best pal Danny Coid at Blackpool after being released by Liverpool as a schoolboy.

“I knew Rickie very well as a kid at Blackpool – I remember him as the unfittest 15 year-old I’d ever met!” laughs Ormerod, who now plays for Wrexham in the Blue Square Premier.

“He was behind the goalkeepers in the fitness tests, red in the face and slower than my grandma!

“But his ability was unbelievable. Blackpool had a very good youth team then and when Nigel Worthington was manager they would play the first team on a Friday and often win.

“We must have been the only team playing in the Football League that had lost to the youth team the day before!

“Rickie has always been quite shy but he would do most of the damage, pinging 25-yard balls.

“He was a midfielder originally but he always had that tremendous ability to score spectacular goals out of nothing.”

Ormerod, right, was recovering from a badly broken leg when Lambert made his two other appearances for Blackpool as a substitute.

Lambert was released by Worthington’s successor, Steve McMahon, in June 2000 and was at Macclesfield when Gordon Strachan brought Ormerod to Southampton in December 2001.

Ormerod scored 19 goals for Saints, including memorable strikes in the FA Cup semi-final win against Watford at Villa Park in 2003 and the club’s last victory at Liverpool that same year.

Lambert scored on his Saints debut, a decade after his Blackpool bow, and is closing in on a century of goals for the club (94 in 165 starts).

“Ten years ago, people wouldn’t have believed you if you’d told them the success Rickie would have,” Ormerod continued.

“But he always had tremendous ability. Some players mature later than others for loads of reasons - mostly luck.

“I can’t remember why he was released but he learnt his trade at Macclesfield and Stockport, got the move to Bristol Rovers and has turned into a top, top player.

“He’s continued to develop and has absolutely flourished at Southampton.

“He’s far more than a target man, he’s the closest thing Southampton have had to another Matt Le Tissier.

“He fully deserves the success he’s had, he’s still the same Rickie. I was playing Call of Duty on the X Box with him and Richard Chaplow, who I know from my Accy [Accrington Stanley] days, just the other week.”

Ormerod was good but not a cult hero.

Rickie will be a legend but he is not the same as MLT .. he will be long remembered but more for the number of goals than the style.

I thought Beattie scored the goals against Watford in the semi final.

Brett doesn't say that Ricky is a new Tiss...he says he's the closest to Matty for us. Lambert will be looked back on as a legend for his goal scoring and for being a major reason we are back in the PL. He is also more than a striker. However, Matty's goals were often a thing of beauty that people talk about years later.

Brett was loved more for being Brett Ormerod brilliant name than for his goalscoring.
Other strikers loved to have him working for them.
He was a cult figure, only the home fans could sing his name and smile

RICKIE IS IMMENSE.

Want a goal from him vs Sunderland and Fulham.

We want 6 points from these two games.

NIGEL - do not play 4-5-1 and too defensively Away at Fulham - Play next two games with belief and confidence.

FIGHT AND WIN.

I think the Echo got the wrong consonant in 'Cult Hero'. Ormerod was mediocre for us but flourished later at Blackpool and was symptomatic of the cheap, poor quality buy made to replace better players due to the directors in place at the time. As much as I love Rickie, nobody is comparable to le God as I'm sure we'd all agreed. If he single-handedly keeps us in the prem for 6 years, then we can start to draw comparisons. What a poor Story!

Brett Ormerod worked extremely hard for Saints and was the reason why Beattie scored so many of his goals. Not a cult hero but certainly did a decent job in his time with the club.

Rickie is highly talented.
He doesn't need pace he has the extra 2 yards in his head.
His strength is tremendous.
He has to hold off sometimes 2 players to get a deft touched header or shielding the ball prior to passing.
What about the balance required to produce the sublime delayed touch, through the legs of the defender, to let Clyne put Puncheon in for goal.
What about the 40 yard snap shots.
You can't teach these things, they come natural.
Long may he lead our line.
IMO,he is already a legend at Southampton, up there with any of the best i've seen in 50 years.

Anyone watch Sports Personality 2012 last night? It was quite good and everything but I can't help thinking the way they missed Southampton's promotion out of the highlights of the year was reminiscent of the very worst excesses of Stalin's historical revisionism.

Ormerod always look liked saints we're short of numbers, and asked the first scruffy kid off the street to come and play. He maximised any potential he had in his career and shouldd be applauded for it.

And I still remember his half volley flying towards the Arsenal goal in the cup final, for those those fleeting seconds before the keeper saved it we all held our breath !!

I know this has nothing to do with this article, but can someone explain to me why Pompey seem to have been given special treatment by the FA for the past year? I'm a Saints fan and my brother-in-law is a Leeds fan. We have both suffered for the sins of our clubs at the hands of the FA, but Pompey seem to lead a charmed life. Are there genuine, legal reasons for this (that I'm too thick to understand) or are there certain members of the FA being kept sweet? I am genuinely interested - no one seems to have explained this previously.

It's funny - most Pompey fans think the rest of this world has this incredible sympathy for their plight and feels terribly sorry about how harshly they've been treated by everyone.

It's not true. People I speak to in the north - who are free of any partisan hostility - reckon they've got more lives than a cat and hope they get closed down because they're sick of hearing about them.

Brett Ormerod was a hod carrier type of player.James Beattie got a lot of goals thanks to the hard graft of Brett.
Lee Barnard was that sort of player a few seasons back and Lambo benefited.
Billy Sharpe worked well in tandem with Rickie last season.
This season Rickie has been more isolated up front under the new system.None of the auxillary strikers have really stepped up to the plate to create a really effective twin striking machine.Enter Gary Hooper stage right perhaps.

I think you mean “dramatic irony”, although that too makes little sense. But you see, what you’re doing here is that thing that often happens when people who aren’t very clever get into an argument with people who clearly know a lot more than them. Namely, they try to use words or phrases that they don’t understand (I’m guessing it was from a half-remembered English lesson in your case) in order to appear more intelligent but, inevitably, they end up using them incorrectly and this just serves to further highlight their mental deficiencies. Why not try reading a book or something?

That would explain it. I've got 'beef' with those Germans at the moment. They're all (not all, obviously) coming over here and setting up ersatz German markets offering hot wine to people. Innit. What rankles is not that they don't have the money - football is still, just about, a working man's game and most fans don't have a spare grand lying about.

It was that they lied to the Trust and said "yeah, of course we'll pay" when they knew they wouldn't be able to. So the trust got as far as it has and now, it would appear, it's crawling to oblivion.

It was the lies told by the best fans in the world to the people trying to save it that have killed the club.
Totally agree...

That would explain it. I've got 'beef' with those Germans at the moment. They're all (not all, obviously) coming over here and setting up ersatz German markets offering hot wine to people. Is this the worst invention ever? I mean, a glass of wine is a wonderful thing but why on earth would you put it in the microwave and stick cloves and sh1t in it? It's a sin, I tell you.
That kind of talk could get you strung up from the nearest tannenbaum round these parts, Retford.

But I do have to agree with you.

Should you ever visit these parts whilst the Christmas markets are in full swing (Strasbourg is the self proclaimed capital of Christmas, you know) then opt for the cidre chaud. It saves you having to refuse an offer - which, in any case, only provokes the locals, causing them to offer a confused look and a 'pourquoi pas?' and is a tad better than 'boiled Bordeaux'.

As for Brett, he did what he did to the best of his ability and was a key member of the Cup Final team and that's good enough for me.

I would agree Strassie.

I have fond memories of Brett & his part in WGS' team from '01 to '04.

The F.A. Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park was a great day out all round for many reasons & of course sticks in the memory, & he more than played his part.

I don't understand the current enthusiasm for all things German at Christmas either. Above Bar is just cluttered up with all the type of sh1t & stuff St. Retford was talking about.

Next Year I'm going to Munich to set up an English Christmas Market....

I paid way over the top for Villa Park. £150 to be sat near the dugout. And because Watford didn't take up their allocation, that stand opposite was half empty. Scandalous!

Made up for it in Cardiff, though, with 'limited view' seats for about twenty quid.

Swings and roundabouts, Rob.

Which is why your idea of setting up in Munich (or Strasbourg) next year is perfectly sensible. I'm just not sure what the Bavarians (or Alsatians) would make of Marmite, Stilton or Gravy. Perhaps if we garnished them with sauerkraut and served it all up with a bottle of Boddingtons ........

2-5 final score. So, that's 19 goals between them in 210 minutes of football.

That's getting on for a goal every 10 minutes.

If we're going to match that against Arsenal, over 180 minutes (18 goals) we're going to have to beat them 11-0!

SOTONIAN FC

The city's name is sometimes abbreviated in writing to "So'ton" or "Soton", and a resident of Southampton is called a Sotonian.

Skeletor was rubbish sorry, rickie is already a legend, but le tizz is actually god, no comparison no imitations, tizz at his best, you would have no change from £70 mill in today's market, might be a slightly exaggeration, probably more like £69 million,

One question. If Lettuce was god, why couldn't he get himself more than 6 or 7 England caps?.

I agree, there are similarities between them

Both slow, big blokes born miles away from Soton. Both had / have delusional fans. ie "Matty" as good as Gazza, and the other day quite a few here were saying "Rickie" was better than Yakubu. And you thought we were delusional. LMAO

Both bloody ugly, and playing for small clubs, Rickies right now a little more following, but unlikely to stay in the top flight for too long.

Rickie hardly likely to get many if any England caps, and if he does will prob be overlooked by the new Geoff Thomas.

Has Rickie got any ambition to play for a big club, that is the question - that could separate them.

Evening all.

My vote is on Branfoot

A pebble, yes. A small stick.......maybe. A brick, no way, poppet!

Poppet? What do you mean by this epithet? What has a mushroom valve got do with anything? Or are you just using an outdated spelling of the word puppet? Not a woman are you?

From the semi final forth I've had a massive dislike of Watford fans. Didn't turn up for the biggest game in their recent history, and those that did were fcuking rude after the game, blaming us for bankrupting them in looking for an excuse for a fight. Wkaners.

But yes, that was a great day out. More so because I was staying at a mates place in Nottingham, which is a great city for going out on the lash.

Loved Cardiff, travelled up from Barry, started drinking as soon as I got there at 9am. Was slightly pished by kick off. Got more so afterwards. The Arsenal fans were very complimentary in contrast - wanted to play us in the final every year!

As Rob has said, appreciate the work Brett put in, but if the DE mean cult status as in "has a funny chant that the fans sing" then Augustin Delgado is a cult Saints player...

We have mulled cider in the Edinburgh Christmas market. Prefer the one manufactured by Westons to be fair.
